Default I Want to know your opinion...

Hey everyone!

Im 15 and im in the middle of nowhere, but i love cars. I really only like imports, and i currently have a 240sx, but i want something a little newer. And before you start asking, no i don't have unlimited money or would my parents pay for the car or insurance, that would be nice but they want me to know what the real world is like. All my family members are into cars, grandma had a 94 mustang gt which my dad currently owns, so im not new to all the sports car stuff but i don't have the experience of driving one for awhile, just since i got my permit which in Arkansas i can get when im 14. My question is, since i do actually work and have saved up money, should i try to get a S2000 or keep my 240sx? I know they are two TOTALLY different cars, but being 15 years old fixin to turn 16 in less than two months, and me not having the time to put the work into the car to fix it up a bit cause i have basketball and school 24/7 (Starting in july have to go and practice everyday till like next February), would the s2000 be a good car for me to get? I won't be a maniac driver as i will pay for it myself, with maybe a little help just cause my dads a cool guy and totally agrees with me getting one, but besides maybe a 1000 dollars, would it be too hard for me to pay for one? Hows the insurance for some of you younger guys? And if i did have the money, would you recommend the car for me? I know everyone says they would be careful, but i feel that when you pay for something, its different. I always have respect for anything i get because it usually takes a lot of effort to get it. So what do you guys think? I know this car is pretty powerful for a first car and accidents do happen, but i would drive with extreme caution, cause if i do one thing wrong, someone out of 1310 people is bound to tell my dad because i pretty much know all of them. I've been looking into the S2k for a long time now, so i know a pretty good bit about it. Don't be afraid to tell me how it is, haha..

I say build your 240. I had a 240 as my first car and I miss it. Spend alittle time and money on it and you will love it.

You do what you want to do. Just keep in mind that your maturity level better be where it seems by my interpretation to be. The only reason why I say this is due to this singualr reason:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=562083

This kid said the same thing.

I know the s2000 is not a 500 hp monster, but the point being is that you will probably end up with an AP1 for costs sake, which if you ask the members on here that own one, will tell you that it can be tougher to tame than a car like the m5 due to its finicky and wild nature. All s2000's can bite you and bite hard, however it seems as if ap1's bite the hardest.

Something to keep in mind. I'm not too much older than you (22), so seeing that thread brings me down a couple pegs, and I am a very responsible driver now that I've had enough time to realize the pitfalls of driving like I have no frontal lobe.

If you do get one congrats. Enjoy it...carefully

Hello jdmhillbilly, welcome to the site.
You asked... I would keep my transportation needs cheap. I'd take that 1K and put part of it into a Roth IRA and some of it into a fund for college expenses. My son is nearly 22; He drives a hand-me-down mini van, but wants a nice sports car too. He's going to college, works part time as a DJ, at a local radio station and pays for his own expenses. When he just received a large sum of money (from his mobile DJ business & radio station work), I told him the same thing. I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but you will have pleanty of time to add to the "family collection" you have going there. BTW, you better be sitting down when you get those insurance quotes Best wishes on your decisions.
... And my son, He just opened up his first retirement account at age 21 ... I wish I had done something like that.

My first car was a 1978 Datsun 280 Z that I paid $650.00 for in 1992. I earned that money by working part time at McDonalds. You sound like a responsible young man, but I agree with the above posters. Take that $1000.00 that your dad is willing to give you and either save it, or use it to get your 240 in good safe running condition. The S2000 will probably be around for another year or two and you can always get a used one later. If you get one now, everything you earn will have to go toward your car payment and insurance. You won't have much if any money to spend on dates or hanging out with your buddies. The 240 is a nice car. Enjoy it and lear rear drive handling so that you can build good habits for when you do get your S.
