Default intro

Hey guys, new to this forum but been on forums before, just going through my 3rd mid life crisis and looking around for a good track car, all arrows lead to a nice second hand s2000. I've had bikes all my life and been looking at a nice alternative and something a little safer. I'll ask all the usual noob questions in the right forum when i find it

thanks

Jonno

Mate,

Great post, just went through it. I also have some buying type questions specific to S2000’s that I would like to float past the experts in these forums.

In Australia the second hand 1999 models seem to be the cheapest around low 20 grand AUD, mid 20s for 2002 and up to the 2005 plus models at around 29 to 34 grand AUD.
Most 1999 models are 120,000 plus klms on the clock and the 2005s can be around 60,000 to 100,000 klm’s on the clock.

There’s a good post i read on all the minor changes to the car over the years of manufacture AP1 to AP2 etc.

So,

I’m primarily after a street cruiser come reliable track car that I don’t have to do lots of mods on to get the most fun out of it, so for the extra factory mods on the 2002 to 2005 is it worth paying the extra bucks for?

50 percent of the S2000s have had some sort of engine mods done, cold air intakes, cat back pipes etc. All these cost money and save me money if I buy a car with all the after market mods done, but it also means they have been driven by someone who wants to go hard. Is it better getting a stock standard and building it up or getting an owner modded car with cat back pipes and cold air intake etc. Is it safe to assume that the motors can take a good hammering and I would be better off going with an owner modded car to save me paying for all the mods?

When inspecting an S2000 for purchase, what do you look for, for obvious wear and tear? Is there anything obvious mechanically that would give you a sign not to buy the car?

Thanks for advice help guys

Welcome.

You're going to have a blast with an s2000, regardless of which year it is!

If you've done a little reading, I'm sure you'll realize that we all have different preferences when it comes to AP1 vs. AP2. Again, they're all fun.

When I was searching, it really came down to the cleanest car I could find in my price range; model year was not a big concern (ended up with a '00)

In general, I'd avoid getting a modified car. To me, that's a sign it was possibly driven hard. That said, I've done exhaust and intake on mine, and I take impeccable care of it, so I am somewhat of a hypocrite!

Good luck with your search!
