Default Introduction. Back Luck. Soliciting Advice.

Cheers everyone!

Picked up an '02 back on March 12th and loved the crap out of it. Until this past weekend something catastrophic occurred in the engine and my local Honda dealership is quoting me ~$11k for a new engine (36k, 3 year warranty). The initial analysis was that it spun a journal bearing.

Does anyone have experience with anything like this? The car only had 88k on the clock. My best alternative is to go to a local shop where they're quoting me $7k with an engine that allegedly has 55k on the clock and will come with a 6 month warranty.

Per Honda, to tear it apart and rebuild it would cost more than $13k.

Any advice is much appreciated in advance!

Damn! DIY, youd probably save a few grand and what you do save on can put towards tools. Id say tear it apart and rebuild it. But what exactly is a journal bearing? Im guessing its part of the bearings that hold the crankshaft in the crank?

11k would be insane to pay for an engine replacement! That's close to the value of the car. Good, used engines pop up on these forums from time to time, often in the form of cars being parted out. Buying one of these from a reputable member might be a good idea. If you cannot do the work yourself, find a local shop you trust (very important)and have them do the installation for you. If you don't know of a good shop, check one of the regional subforums for a recommendation.

Also, if the motor that shop wants to sell you is an F20c, I doubt it only has 55k. They're out there (my '01 has 58k), but the newest AP1 is ~9 years old at this point. If you can, see if you can learn more about where it came from (VIN?) before making a purchase. For $7k, I would want everything check on that motor, before and after installation.

I think it's important to note that NEW engines from Honda are ~$6k for the short block. So the prices between the dealership and shop aren't that different. $7k(new engine)+$4k(installation) or $3-4k(used engine)+$3-4k(installation).

Then again, if I was considering $7k on installation of a used engine, I might buy NEW parts from Honda and do the swap myself. That might be a but adventurous, though

Thanks. Swapping it myself is more or less out of the question at this point, mostly because I have nowhere to do the work.

Not sure on the exact specifics of the used engine, though thanks for the tip on asking about VIN. I also found this... has anyone dealt with this site before?

I guess another question is... what kind of market is out there for S2k's with a blown motor?

Where are you located? There may be a local mechanic who can do it for you without robbing you blind.

I live in Peoria, IL. One of my coworkers recommended a shop where he has his Porsche worked on, and they're asking $2,000 plus the cost of the motor.

Is there any difference between the AP1 USDM and JDM motors? Looking on eBay for something, and while I'm not stoked on that idea I'd rather know for sure that a JDM motor can be swapped in just as easily.

That looks like a good deal, but the more I read about used engines online the more horror stories I hear. Say nothing of the fact that I never would have expected this to happen to a Honda motor with 80k on the clock. There's just no good way out of this one...
