That's the year it has been registered with DVLA. However it travelled a fair way from Japan!
Open your bonnet and check the lower right hand side corner for your VIN.
Then pop that here:

..and find the REAL production year for your car (together with other info as the factory it was made etc.)

That is fascinating, thanks again for the link! I had no idea it was made in Japan and then imported. I almost feel like I should get a JDM rear bumper!
