The transmission tunnel was carpeted in 2000 models, got a leather(ette?) center console topper by 2002. Not sure if 2001 had it or not. The biggest difference already mentioned was that 2002 got rear glass with a defroster. Suspension was refined slightly each year too - spring rates and maybe roll bars.

2002 first year for leather center console cover, upgraded oil jet squirters which are highly digested if you ever add forced induction, glass rear window in top, tweeters added to sound system, less twitch suspension setup with softer sway bars.

I would not worry about compression on an unmolested car at all.

I guess I would respectfully disagree. Over-rev will show up in a compression test.
Have you compression tested every car you ever bought? The vast majority have not and haven't had an issue.

No I have only bought two used cars in my life so it would be pointless most of the time, but AP1 have weak retainers that break if the car was over-revved. and for a cheap test or doing it myself with a guage would be worth it. On many other models this would not be an issue but since the retainers are a known issue on this car, that is what I would check. S2000s have few known issues that can be expensive, this is one, that is why I say that. The car will drive fine and you'd never know they were about to fail until they do. But if I were researching this car and people told me this can be a problem, I would do it to be on the safe side. It is probably 99% chance it will not be an issue, but he can decide how much comfort level he wants in his purchase.

When someone asks about what to look for, it is worth a mention.

Most s2000s are unmolested. for every modified one, I see 5 stock.

From what I understand that's not entirely accurate. Honda didn't start using the upgraded oil bolts until around the time the VIN numbers were ending in the 8000's. So while technically you can say 2002 was the first year they were used, not all 2002 models have them. Only those produced after the VIN's hit that number. To be on the safe side you're better off with a 2003 if going AP1 just to eliminate any doubt.

Lol... I'm not sure where you get those figures from. For where I live, the ratio is about 1:1.

2002 had the highest production of all the years, it would be stupid to pass over all 2002s "just to be safe". It's not like there are so many s2000s out there that you can afford to be so picky.

semi-fancy Connecticut. Most S2000s are weekend cars driven by middle to older women. True story
