Well I read in Sport Compact Cars "project s2000" where they bought a 2000 that needed new valve springs, retainers and a valve job. They said the car has weak crowns and inevitably over time they wear weather your nice to it or not. I just don't like the sounds of that, almost like a cancer. And chances are I will be buying a 2000 or 2001 and it will be out of warrantee because of the age or what not, maybe the mileage.

Whoever wrote the article was talking out his backside. Get a better source for your advice, and don't worry about S2000 reliability. We've had a number of owners (some supercharged) exceed 100,000 miles with NO problems. The guy who wrote that article is just talking trash.

My car only has about 30k miles, but one of my friends bought an S2000 new in 2000 as his first car. After over 100k miles, it still runs like a champ. Keep in mind, he was a teenager and didn't exactly go easy on it. He learned to drive stick on it, and drives it very hard on a regular basis. He has never had to do anything besides routine maintenance. You can't beat an S2k for sports car reliability.

i've wanted an s2k for 3 years. when i got it, i musta been the happiest man on earth. plus miata's arent homo... they're actually pretty good. its great power to weight ratio and its really torqy
Tell me about the difference between the two. I just sold my miata. The homo thing just cracks me up. These rough and tough boys here. I am looking at buying a 2000 model with 15000 miles on it from one of my clients. Is it really that gutless. Does it drive like a base model 4 banger civic when the Vtec's not on? The Miata "torqy"???

Is it as tossable as the miata? Let say that if you drag race the early miata without ever having to go into Vtec, how would the S do. Not that you would drag race on the street, but the 90 Miata's the only benchmark that i have. Or the early MR2.

Thanks

Jeff

I don't own a S YET ! but I have driven quite a few and in comparison with the Miata as far as "tossing it around" I would much rather toss the S around, much better handling car.

I have no experience in this, but I would say the stock Miata would beat the stock S if you don't go into VTEC, the S just does not have that much torque until you get to VTEC, but the real question is "Why would you drag race a Miata or anything else and NOT go into VTEC range ?"

I personally like that the car is docile when driving around town in traffic and when you want to go fast, you have VTEC. Again, I don't own a S YET ! so what I am saying here is just gut feelings from driving both, no experience at drag racing those toys.

I had my s2k for 2 years. I raced all the time and beat on it. And I never had any problems with it, very good car! And I was 17 when i owned the car so if I could afford i think most can.

Now I moved on to better, but the s2k will always be a favorite of mine.

JD Power does a lot of measurements. The latest Vehicle Dependibility Survey listed the S2000 as the most reliable in its class.

I have never driven a stock S 2000. I am not asking anyone to drag race. I need a reference mark or bench mark to compare the amount of pick up on the S. This is gonna to be my street car. So i am looking to a bit of pick up in the LA traffic. I don't think I want to drive at 5000rpm in traffic. Have you driven an early Miata? They are so tossable, just like the early MR2s. So many of us read specs on stuff like Gs, 0-60 and on and on. driving experience is totally different. Do you think a 460 hp turbo porsche can out turn a miata? On paper, of course, by a mile. I can tell you this, the answer is no. I was the driver in the blown 911, and this stock miata walked away from me in some hair pins in the Santa Monica mountains. And no, I am not a bad driver at all. We talked a little bit after that, he was just some local guy messing around on a sunday drive. So, I went to buy a miata after that. It turned out that this thing is so much fun at the limit.

Out on the track, I have seen this track prepped S2000 turbo pulling good lap time against some of my friend's 911, also track cars.

duh! of course the miata will win.

don't worry about the TQ argument in the S, our gearing is well designed to move the car below the vtec. plus contrary to popular belief, we have a good amount of TQ.
