I just put down a deposit on an MY06. picking her up today or tomorrow.

with 850 miles. and I got it for 25.1k

I think it's a good deal
is this from a dealership? was it titled? if not, could this be a dealer "demo"?
only reason i'm asking is that i'd rather have a 1 owner used car at 3000 miles than a demo at 850 miles. the S is a car that I'd want with proper break in period, especially if i want to keep it for a long time. just somethin to think about

say invoice = 29k (for ex) request 28500 at multiple dealerships and see who takes it.
I've always heard/read that offering $500 over dealer invoice is "fair" and a good deal due to prep work done by the dealership to get the car ready if brand new.

Now is a good time because it is end of the month. Find out the invoice price and offer 4% over that. If they balk at your offer, walk away. If they want to sell the car they will call you back.

Get pre approved through your financial insitution before you go in so you know you have the funds, tell the dealership that you are pre-approved and tell them the price you want the car for. let them sweat it not you.

Do not entertain any offers above your wanted price and make sure they understand the price you want is "out the door" meaning the final price after all the taxes and charges and BS is tacked on.

Do not get any treatments installed on the paint or interior.

Good luck.

it was a one owner car. i got it from a nissan dealership.

they said a guy traded in for a Z.

the 25k price wasn't a OTD price tho.

i still had to pay all those BS fees.. sigh

Being in the hunt right now for a new S, I have been quoted a extremely large range of prices. I have been told dealers in L.A. will sell for below invoice. I have been told I should be able to get one for $31k which is $700 below invoice but I have not yet spoken to them. Someone else sent me a e-mail claiming I could get a new S for $32k out the door at a dealership S. of L.A. I have not talked to them yet. (Can't believe that one but I will call) Locally, I have found a 07 with the rear wing, front spoiler, side strakes, security, for $33k, add all that up and it should be $37.5, I also found another dealer sticking to a $5k "markup" because its so rare.

I am thinking there must be some kick-back in effect since several people have mentioned below invoice prices to me.

I agree with what soem other people have mentioned about buying the car now. It's very difficult to get a good deal on a convertible at the beginning of the summer. The dealership figures if you don't buy it, somebody else will in the very near future. However, in january, if you go in there and end up not buying the car, they figure it will be sitting on their lot for at least another couple months. Right now, everybody is trying to clear out the 06's and make room for '07s. They are essentially the same car, so you could save a bunch of money by buying an 06 now instead of an 07 in a few months.

If not in a hurry, wait until poor weather. Dealerships hate to not sell anything (0 units looks bad). Use it to your advantage. Go into the dealership on a rainy weekday (no one will be buying a car) and then go in and work the deal. Remember you dont have to buy the car and dont let the dealer get you all excited.

If they dont give you a deal that you feel good about, get up and walk out.

When I bought mine they stopped me at the door once and at my car twice

haha...bad weather days are few and far between here in San Diego lol. Thanks for all the input guys. So far, i've heard quite a few good things:
  • Get an '06
  • Get invoice price and start from there.
  • Buy at beginning/end of year.

Here's some input on my side:

*I'd prefer to get an '07 simply because i want something as new as possible. From my experience, Honda dealerships (in my area) let everyone test drive whatever they want. Even brand new inventory has a couple hundred miles on it to start due to test drives. So an '06 would have alot of test driven miles on it. I even had this one sales guy test drive an s2k for me...and the dude was like drifting around the corners trying to get me all hyped up. All that accomplished was cross that s2k off my list since it had been beaten to death by the sales guy.

*I have the finances to buy the car now, but I'm still an undergrad. This is my last semester, and i'd want to wait til I got out and got a stable full time job b4 I commit to buying a new car. I'm doing an internship right now @ $23/hr...which is good money, but once I graduate, i dunno if i'll still have that. Just wanna wait for now for security purposes. As far as buying one in the winter...i dunno if i can wait that long =)

*Where can i get invoice pricings?

Thanks for all the input guys...really big help =)

My strategy is to go in the evening, and do the negotiation. By the time we get to something reasonable, it's usually pretty late at night so they want to go home. After doing the negotiation, right when I am about to sign the paperwork, I get up and say, I have to think about this, and start walking out..

Every time I have done this, they end up coming back and saying, "what do we need to do to get you to sign". That's when I say " Take another $$$$$ off." It's worked for me every time.

I've seen numerous discussions about this and there is always conflicting advice being passed around. I'm not sure "invoice" means much. As one example, here's an interesting take on it if you have some time to kill:

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=211677

I researched what others are paying and used that as my guide. If you are not going to be buying until May, I wouldn't waste anyone's time talking price now. Do your homework and be prepared to shop around. I bought mine in MD as a certified used MY06 with 1400 miles on it from a Honda dealer. I rented a car and drove up to get it. I paid a couple thousand less than a new one and got a better warranty at the same time.
