Default S2K as new project car...

Hey, all.

I sold my project car (an '05 Tiburon with too many mods to list) and bought a Boxster. I love the Porsche, and while it is a phenomenally fun car to drive, it is not mod-friendly. Mods are incredibly expensive, and the flat six has a tendency to self-destruct, so I'm not eager to void my remaining 18 months of warranty.

I've got the mod itch. Bad.

The S2K and the Miata are the two platforms I've been looking at for a new project car, and the sheer volume of Honda parts is making me lean toward an S2K. I don't yet know much about the model year differences - I know the S2K's switched to egas - the older models are probably more in my price range for a hobby car. If anyone has any insight about any model year that's more boost-friendly (I've been looking at the Greddy turbo kit, since it's CARB certified), I'll take any guidance and/or direction to specific threads. I'll be working the search, too.

Thanks in advance - looking forward to learning about a new platform...

you will find everything and anything you will ever want to know about the s2000 on this website. Check out the forced induction section, modifications and parts and technical. Just order up a helms service manual and your good to go.

If you are going to mod to the extent you're talking (forced induction), then either platform is fine. Both have advantages...the ap2 has 200cc more displacement; the ap1 has longer gears (an advantage for turbo/sc).

From an aesthetic perspective, there are differences between the MY00-01 & MY02-03 (AP1) and the MY04+ (AP2). Take a look at each to see if the different bumpers and interior designs make a difference to you.

BTW...what is egas? If you're talking about e85, no s2k can take that fuel. If you're talking drive by wire (DBW), then that change came in 06. The DBW cars have fewer FI kits...but they have one that is really easy to do, Kraftwerks SC, but I don't believe it is CARB yet if that is important to you. You will need to have a custom turbo built if you want to go that route and there are only a couple options for the stand alone ecu that would be required.

egas is what the Porsche community calls drive-by-wire.

Thanks for the comments!
