Default Vertical plastic strips infront of trunk lid?

What is the purpose of the two plastic strips(~3/4" wide) at the top edge of the trunk lid? Are the drains underneath?

Checked the service manual. It's called a lower window molding. Directly below the molding is a clip that's seated between the rear fender and the panel forward of the trunk. The clip is snapped to the bottom of this molding and secured with the outer screw. The manual doesn't go into saying what's the purpose of this part, just how to remove and reinstall.

I have yet to check my car but removal of this molding and clip may possibly ease in removal of the large panel forward of the trunk and/or the rear fenders. The service manual doesn't cover anything related to the body panels so the body manual (which I don't have) will definitely cover this.
