When buying a S2k
Hello peeps,
I have a few questions about the S2k so can anyone help me please.
Im looking to buy an S2k in the next week or so and would like some info on what to look out for (common faults etc),
Am i right in thinking that an AP1 is a pre- face lift model and AP2 a face lift? What are the differences apart from body styling?
Also, can anyone tell me if the S2k came with an LSD gear box?
Would appreciate the help
Thanks
Saj.

K, so there are a lot of resources here on the site for this stuff, but,
1. Yes all S2000's have LSD
2. AP1 is divided into 2 specific segments - MY99-01:
-all MY99-03 have the F20C - 2.0L 4cyl revs out at 9K with 237hp and 150 something tq.
-plastic rear window prone to distortion
-stiffer rear spring rate than front (they like to rotate the most)
-2 speaker audio system
-"safest" ECU form fact - runs richest of all MY
MY02-03:
-glass rear window
-storage pockets, 4 speaker audio
-stiffer front spring rate than rear
-tan interior option offered
3. Then we have the AP2 from MY04 to present with there own changes. MY04-05:
-Most important the engine: for US market only the F22 - 2.2L 4cyl revs out at 8K same hp about 10 more tq was fitted to the AP2 chassis...everywhere else in the world the F20C carries on til MY07.
-transmission: individual gear ratios are changed to work in harmony with the F22 and deliver more mid range punch
-pretty sure the clutch delay valve was installed on the 04's in an attempt to lessen the stress on the LSD during hard acceleration - most S2ki guys consider this instalment to be B.S. and remove it.
-susapension is softened from spring rates to shock dampening as well as changes to sway bar diameter in an effort to "tame" the tendency to rotate more than your average driver can handle during cornering
-the mounting points are changed in the suspension in an effort to make the car more stable.
-wheels and tires are changed to a larger size and wheels are non staggered while tires remain staggered.
MY06:
-user defeatable Vehicle Stability Assist is added in an effort to further lessen the risk of an inexperienced driver letting the roadster with 50/50 weight distribution get away form them.
-the very deisreable Laguna Blue pearl/Monte Carlo Blue Pearl from the NSX is added. You'll find all of the colors the S2000 comes in are from the NSX originally.
MY07-08
-suspension is further softened
-Club Racer CR model is added with no softop, optional radio and AC delete offered, track friendly suspension, and aero package. It comes in colors and interior trim unique to standard S2000.

One thing about S2000's:
It might just be the most crashed car on the planet. Check the Carfax, and find a local body man to take a look at the car. I saw some wicked damage before I found the S2K that I decided to buy.
If you live in a Northern Climate, and plan on enjoying the car between late fall and early spring, try to locate a car with a hard top already attached. Adding one later is an expensive PITA, and the hard top doesn't add anything to the resale value compared to what it costs to buy one, paint it, buy the hardware, and have it adjusted to fit.
If you want a clean, unmolested car, check for cars that have been "unmodified" prior to being put up for sale. Cutouts in the fender liners and front bumper area are easy to see, and a dead giveaway that a forced induction system was busy stressing the engine. Other things to look for might vary from system to system. If you wonder how common this is, check for "part-out" sales in the classified section.
