which year is the best?
The "best performer" factor has always been a heated topic. Some argue the AP1s are quicker with the broader power band and stiffer suspension, while others argue that the AP2s are faster with the greater torque, new tranny, and wider tires.
There is a video circulating around the Gallery forum, which has Best Motoring running a JDM AP1 against a JDM pre-06 AP2 (with the 9000rpm redline). The video suggests that the AP2's suspension & other goodies help the car to achieve a better lap time. Another video earlier from Best Motoring (also posted on the Gallery forum) suggested that the pre-06 AP2 ran a little slower than the 06 AP2 (which has the 8000 rpm redline and different tranny, just like USDM AP2s). I personally take those videos as a grain of salt, since there are so many variables. The drivers were fooling around quite a bit in the videos ...
As for the fun factor? Some people would say the 9,000 rpm and the stiffer suspension make the car more raw. Some people like the refinement of the AP2s and its modified transmission, and feel that the AP1s weren't tuned very well in the suspension department (hence the tendency to snap oversteer). It really boils down to personal preference ...
I guess it's not too hard to figure out what my vote would be, since I own an AP2. I personally vote for 2004/2005 AP2s. I like the newer bumper, headlights, taillights, glass top (which is also availale in 2003), wider wheels, more refined interior, upgraded suspension, etc ... also the idea of a newer car -- I figured that a newer car is always better when it comes to minor issues, recalls, etc. I didn't mind forgoing the signature 9,000rpm redline for these changes, after comparing the two in test drives. However, I didn't want the 06 AP due to the DBW system and the new seat design (again ... just a personal preference).

I noticed that both cars have there ups, and downs. My AP2 works wonderful on big wide open tracks, however just a couple of weekends ago at a bigger karting track it sucked compared to the AP1. I was shifting like every 2 seconds, and the AP1 could pull off higher revs, with more v-tech and was much better suited for a tight technical course. I couldn't even come close to beating the AP1. But I must say on big tracks like MAM it works great. I have no complaints. The karting track we go to around here USAIR, isn't as fun as big tracks but it is cheap, new, and close to home.
