Our local Wal-Marts are usually sold out of ammo as soon as it comes in. It has been difficult to find decent ammo for .40cal. Thankfully i haven't been out swingin lead lately ... so, i'm still good for a little while.

That was one of the reasons for me buying my little .17HMR. Usually a few boxes always on the shelf.

The ammo runs have started to slow down so you'll start to see hard to get stuff nowadays.

Every time I've gone to Shooters, I've found all the ammo I needed. Not always the best deal (close to good deals) but always a reliable source from my experience. That's another option.

What brand 1911 did you pick up? I have a couple in my collection (Kimber and Rock River Arms) for target shooting. With a custom barrel and trigger job, those things are amazingly accurate.
I picked up a Springfield, it was about the same price as the Rock River but I'm more familiar w/ the brand; I've heard bad things about the Kimbers (being made too tight, requiring a lot of break-in, etc.), what has your experience been with yours?

I'm probably going to carry this around, so I don't want the trigger job, and it kind of makes the barrel mod unnecessary too. Although I'm going to cycle about 500 rounds through it (as soon as I can find the ammo), so maybe it's not a bad idea.

My Kimber has been great. I definitely got a well made one. Did not need a trigger job at all and shoots with stock barrel, <3 inch groups at 50 yards with .45 target loads (185g) right after break in. Since my brother at one time did some bullseye target shooting, I since did a Marvell .22 rimfire conversion to it.

My Rock River is a NM Hardball made when they 1st started customizing 1911s. Amazingly tight tolerances (no barrel movement, no slide movement, etc.) and it is able to shoot 1-2 inch groups at 50 yards.

Between the two, I've probably put 7-10k rounds through both of them in the last few years. No problems with them.
