Default WTB: Lucky Rabbit's Foot

Last night, driving home from Ale House, I was merging onto 295. Doing 60mph, when I shifted from 3 to 4, the engine lost power and wouldn't rev passed 3-4k. At the time, I had a CEL for an ignition system problem. I put the car in neutral, the engine died, and I pulled over.

Ryan and Derek came back to check the car out, where we decided that the car wasn't getting any spark. It would turn over and start on a push-start for a second, then die. I had AAA tow it to Honda of the Avenues, and I expected to get a call today saying that I blew a coil pack or something.

Instead, I get a call saying that I need a new engine. The timing chain skipped a tooth apparently, and the engine dropped a valve, which the #3 piston then hammered into my spark plug. The dealership officially quoted me approximately $7,500 for a new engine. My car is 40 days out of its extended warranty. F my life.

I don't know how many people will believe me, b/c people say this all the time on the internet, but I HAVE NEVER OVER-REVED MY ENGINE. Let's just get that out of the way. After talking to the dealership, and especially after talking to another guy who was throwing the same code with the same results, it has become evident to me that the timing chain skipped a tooth, causing the valve to drop while the piston was going up ... and the rest is poo. The other guy ended up having to drop a new engine in it, so he stepped up to an AP2.

I'm trailering the car to Sarasota, where my favorite machine shop (who built my old 396 roller motor for my old '68 Camaro) will most likely be going to town on my car.

However, I started thinking ... if I drop an F22 into my car, do I need to get a standalone ECU, or can I use an OEM AP2 ECU to run everything? The search is not working, so don't flame me for this question please.

The car is going to be trailered down to Sarasota, so having the engine in Jax doesn't help too much right now. I can't decide if I'm going to drop a new engine in yet b/c I need to pull the head and see what's going on with the #3 cylinder -- if the cylinder is fine, I can just get new pistons, plugs, valves & retainers w/o having to drop an engine in there. So I won't know til it gets to Sarasota and they pull the head.

It is all good man just try to help you and help out a buddie. sorry that i did not say it sooner but i am very sorry to hear about the engine that sounds like a nightmare. Also Dspec do you know if since the AP1 is limited at roughly 9 grand and the AP2 is limited at roughly 8 grand when you run the AP1 cpu with the AP2 engine will it take the engine to 9 red or 8 red line? Or is this a question for willie gee?

the ap1 ecu will make the ap2 rev to 9. A shift beeper or something to help limit the revs is highly reconended.

Another heads up. You will have to get the keys reprogramed to work with the new ecu.

Thanks for the info Derek, and thanks for the condolences guys.

I haven't seen the engine since it was towed in, but I'm guessing that I need a new engine. It wouldn't start, which makes me think that the crank probably got damaged and locked up. Hopefully, I can drop an F22 in there ... we'll have to see.

Moral of the story -- get your CELs taken care of ASAP.
