your best bet would be to call up aem tech support. They are pretty friendly, when you reach them, and will answer this question correctly.

My thoughts are, I think that your friend is correct. But at the same time you don't seem totally comfortable with tuning/ possibly electronics. So you can ask your installer/ tuner about this and they might be willing to create the adapter you need.
