Default Tuning/Dyno Economic Research

**Updated** "motor tune-up" Annual consumer expenditure has been posted

I am a researcher for the Small Business Development Center in San Antonio, TX. We are a government program funded by US Taxpayer money. Our goal is to provide FREE Industry, Financial, and Market research to current Small Business owners or future Entrepreneurs nationwide. We also help Chambers of Commerce and local communities nationwide.

We are attempting to capture a snapshot of the "Dyno/Tuning" industry. Since this is niche industry all of the financial and market statistics that we can provide are classified under the Umbrella of the following North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Codes:
811111 General Automotive Repair
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/n...0NAICS%20Search
&
811118 Other Automotive Mechanical and Electrical Repair and Maintenance
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/n...0NAICS%20Search
&
811198 All Other Automotive Repair and Maintenance
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/n...0NAICS%20Search

Our Financial RMA's (Risk Management Association) are based off of these NAICS Codes, as you can see they are not specific to this one industry.

We are hoping to compile a more detailed snapshot, any information on
1. Customer profile (demographic, average consumer expenditures)
2. Financial Ratios
3. Any other information you think would helpful to complete this snapshot
would be greatly appreciated!

feel free to email me at hisham.eid@utsa.edu (please pm me also since the spam blockers are on high alert)

Also if you need information regarding other industries please contact me and I will do my best to help out, if not i can direct you to others who can help.

Just South Africa! J/K

The Snapshot is a work in progress, and non of the information we have in our database comes from people actually working in the industry. This provides us with unrealistic statistics, and therefore unrealistic forecast.

I'm just attempting to reach out to people who are involved in this niche.

Since I have worked with information like this before I can say to everyone that this is legit and is a huge help in trying to bring financing to small businesses in the sector. Anyone running a tuning/dyno shop should be highly motivated to help out. The benefits will probably take over a year to be seen and may not be directly felt, but they will come.

Thanks Carrera4!

The information collected helps those who already own a shop compare their finances to industry averages, ask for a loan to expand. When you've done your research (more targeted demographics, accurate industry averages & trends) banks are more willing to help out! Their could be several Government SBA loans or grants available to you! depending on what area's you choose to expand to.
The closest customer profile i could find was provided by Thirdwave Research.
it is Titled "Motor Tune Up" there are a few more categories, i will post some of that info up when i get back to the office tomorrow.

******How to interpret Household Spending report*******

Total
The total number of households within all demographic categories listed.

Household Count
The total number of households matching a specific demographic segment within the specified geography.

Market potential
How much money will likely be spent by a demographic subcategory on the product/service in question for the selected geography. The market potential for a product is calculated by multiplying the average expenditure per purchase by the total number of households.

Average Annual Expenditure
The average expenditure for one year on a product/service among all households within a demographic segment.

Expenditure Share
What percentage the selected product/service represents when compared to total annual purchases of consumer goods. For instance, an Expenditure Share of 8% means 8% of a household's expenditures are devoted to the specified product/service.

Geography Index
How a specific demographic segment in the selected geography compares to the United States as a whole. An index higher than 100 indicates that households in the selected geography make higher than average purchases in this category. An index of 250 means those households are 2.5 times as likely to purchase a specified product/service than all other households on average.

Demographic Category
Demographic characteristics are divided into six major groups:

Age of Householder
Race of Householder
Ethnicity of Householder
Household Income
Housing Unit Occupancy
Household Type

Each demographic category contains several segments (subcategories).

Demographic Share
The percentage of expenditures on the selected product/service represented by this demographic segment.

Demographic Index
This measurement is used to compare a demographic segment to the United States (all households) as a whole. It is a means to identify population segments that have a greater propensity to purchase. An index higher than 100 indicates that households in this demographic segment have higher than average purchases in this category. For example, an index of 250 for Married Couples with Children means those types of households are 2.5 times more likely to purchase the product/service than all households on average.
