Rob, the M helmet issue has become an issue this year for most HPDE groups. It was related to the 2005 spec, but I don't know the details. Just sayin'

I think I've had 2 tech inspections where they checked to make sure my helmet was SA05+. One was my first trackday several years ago.

Thanks Lou, that's why I threw in the qualifier about things changing in the last year since I've been on the track. I'll have to update my "first track day" web page.

It does appear Track Daze is OK with an M2000, by the website. So it definitely varies. But like Pete said above:
You will not be allowed to drive with a "M" tech helmet at many (all?) HPDE
events.

Might be an age thing? I know for autox, the helmet is supposed to have a cert date less than 10 years old. So, an M2005 and up would be okay, but an M2000 is aged out.

I'd confirm with Trackdaze regarding the helmet cert. It could be that the website is not updated. I know that they checked for sa2005 when I was out with them a few months ago.

SA helmets give you fire protection as well as multiple impact protection (M helmets are not tested for this).

In terms of cost difference, a SA rated helmet might cost an additional ~$75 and should last for 10 years.

Not trying to be a dick, but if you can't afford a decent helmet you probably can't afford to take your car to the track.

Anyone doing the SCCA PDX next weekend? I just registered.

No rollbar needed if you have a hardtop.

I'm not taking my car because right now, no, I can't afford it. I need lower seats to get my head under my rollbar which will be about $1500 for both seats (I don't want non-FIA knock off seats in my car) and I can't justify that expense right now.

I'm driving a friend's car. This might be a one time thing which is why I was lamenting the cost of the helmet. It's turning my $250 day into a $500 day.

Ok. Well, remember that Mercedes has loaner helmets (free) so you could get 2 full days at the track for $350.
