Don't be intimidated. They are what you make them and everyone there competing ran their first event at some point or another. Go out to have fun and improve your driving, you'll have a blast. Its easier said than done, but don't even pay attention to other peoples times when you're first starting out.

For the last 2 years I been competing in CDC, pretty laid back. But I want to improve even more so this year I'm trying to branch out, and get a few track days also.
The only way to get better is to compete against better

I agree but it's still intimidating. I'm thinking about also registering for autox inc which seems like it's also associated with SCCA. Any thoughts on that organization?
[/quote]
What's intimidating for you? I think the AI events are well-run, and depending upon class, good competition can show up. Pretty good site (Waldorf). I'm registered for the event on 3/10.
Soo.... I'm thinking with summer tires on my car and the cold temps this weekend, it might be a good idea to wait until a little later in the season before I try my first event. The original plan was to go to Waldorf on Saturday.
Any thoughts? Any problems with a beginner coming in mid-season? Obviously, not expecting/trying to actually compete against anyone except myself at this point - just want to improve my driving.

Well from my impression of the people whom I met that competes in SCCA are pretty hardcore, and I feel like a little man haha. But that's ok gotta branch out this year, I'm not sure what class I'm in either but since your registering for the 10th I think I am also depending on how saturday goes.
Someone told me I can get away with STR class? My mods are coilovers, sway bars, ball joints, intake, exhaust, testpipe, re-11 215F 245R.

You should be fine in STR. Technically intakes that require cutting aren't STR legal, but I ran with a Fujita intake and nobody cared. The tech inspectors said "nobody will care until you start winning with it."

What do you mean cutting? I have comptech intake box. I heard that I might get crap for the testpipe but like you said until I start winning it won't be a problem.

Test pipe isn't STR legal but I won't be complaining. Intake is ok unless you cut the body, as some CAIs require. It'll be nice to have a couple new S2k's in the STR group (Vinny with the white AP2 is coming over from RBS too, last time I spoke with him). No need to feel intimidated. Find me or Glenn or someone and we'll get you straightened out. Reality is, everybody there is very very helpful and friendly. Noel showed me around my first SCCA event and everything was smooth, though I didn't show up early enough.
You're going to love the lot if you've just been doing CDC events.

That be great! I just got an evo VIII MR in dec. and it's the next project I want to build. So it would be nice to know and see what a prepped evo/ evo driver does.
I definitely want to try and make it to a bunch of SCCA events this year (only attended some CDC events last year), hopefully I can see some of your guys there. I'm a newb with auto-xing, and don't care so much about being the best as much as I just want to improve my driving and have fun. Anything you guys recommend beforehand for the SCCA events? I definitely need to pickup a helmet this year. The SCCA events are either morning or afternoon? I need to get over to the site and register. Anyone that has any pointers or advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Test pipe puts you into BSP. I wouldn't PERSONALLY complain, and I doubt there's anyone who would in the local STR class, but be advised that your car WOULD be illegal for the class. Honestly, I'd say to run BSP.
Are there hardcore folks who go to DC events? Yes. And they (we?) make up not even 1/3 of the population that goes. There are a lot of people either just starting out, or running the wrong car for the class, etc. Regardless of how you finish, just keep a mindset that you're going to improve every time you go out, and make THAT happen.
I've gone from "slow as balls" to "slow as slightly more aerodynamic balls". Nobody is going to be upset / dislike you because you aren't hyper-competitive or the fastest car there.
After watching 20 Electric cars sign up for an event last year where each of them finished in about double the time of the next slowest competitor, I certainly won't complain. Mike (somethingsomething350z) on here runs BSP, and is a *really* nice and helpful guy. STR was lucky enough to lose the one local douchecanoe, but sadly, gained me in the process, so I'm going to be offsetting that.
