Thumbs up Aberdeen, MD

My sister might have her job transferred from NJ to Aberdeen, MD. How's the area?

Thanks!

It's quiet...like boonies quiet. If she's used to the big city... she's not gonna like it much. But on the other hand, sometimes being in a quiet area is nice.

Without this coming across wrong, is it "ghetto"? That's how my sister described it to me (even though she's never been there). Not sure why she has this impression or who gave it to her and I think that's a big thing steering her away from the area.

If she has to work in Aberdeen, but doesn't want to live that far in the boonies, where would be a suitable suburban type area? (She's one who loves suburbia: malls, Starbucks, Targets, etc.).

By the way, where is Aberdeen located? (If you had to describe it to someone who's not knowledgeable about that area.)

Aberdeen

The closest populated area would probably be Belair.

Because of the military base, one might consider Aberdeen a "transient" area. Service people constantly shuffling in an out of the area because of assignments.
That may be where the Ghetto rep comes from.

White Marsh is VERY built up. So is Belair. I used to live in Middle River. Now THAT place is Ghetto!!!!

My sis currently works for one of the military bases slated to be closed in NJ and that's why Aberdeen is where she may be headed. Of course, just because you work in one town doesn't mean you have to live there too.

My brother lives in Bel Air and that area is quite nice. Housing is expensive but not as expensive as DC or Baltimore suburbs. I liked Bel Air area. I don't know how long the commute will be from Bel Air to Aberdeen but if she is going to settle in that area, she might consider Bel Air.

she would have an s2k buddy up here, my wife and i live about 5 miles from aberdeen, its central to alot of things, 95 takes 25 minutes to baltimore, which has a ton of nigth life, belair is a pretty populated area, lots of restaraunts and places to go, i wasnt exactly thrilled before i bought my house here, but i am in the civil engineering field and can say from personal knowledge that the area is being built up rapidly, real estate is booming, but where isnt it i guess? good luck to her either way

aberdeen does have ghetto, its pretty much split by route 40, its moreso down in edgewood, white marsh is VERY expensive, but well worth it at the same time, although i have timed the drive, 13 minutes on 95 from exit 80 to the avenue, honda367 is right when he says belair is very nice, the commute is about a 15 minute one, traffic in belair is horrible, i try and stay away from there on holidays and weekends

aberdeen like everyone has said is kinda quiet b/c of just the bases and marsh land being there, once you get out of there and back down 95 a little bit is where bel air and such it. bel air is a very nice area imo.....it's a little busy especially below it towards white marsh. she could live in bel air/white marsh area and have a very easy commute up 95 to aberdeen.

some others that live in that area might chime in but i would think traffic would be going more south in the morning where she would be going north and vice versa at the end of the day

ghetto areas are middle river/essex...now my friend jason just bought a house in middle river and it's a pretty nice where he lives, all new homes. it's right of the highway and pretty convenient but there is plenty of ghetto close by in essex.

bel air/white marsh area gets my vote for living area, unless she would prefer the boonies up in northern md to the west or north east of aberdeen

With several thousand new jobs coming to Aberdeen Proving Grounds traffic is going to get a little heavier in all directions up there.
