I think I paid about $230 online. Glad I didn't miss the cutoff and hit with that late fee.
that's really ridiculous... Sales tax on a NEW S should be around $1300-1400, right?
So you're paying a third of that over again every year you own the car?
Does the money go into the general fund or specifically for road projects?
And VA doesn't tax you for OTHER personal property, right? Just cars and real estate?

you know, paying all these taxes that i never used to pay wouldnt bother me if it wasnt for the fact that even after all the extra taxes im paying, the area still needed to offer bonds to fund road improvement projects. that to me makes no damn sense for an area that is clearly wealthier than than where i came from (miami fl)

In Ohio we paid 6.5% sales tax on a car BUT it was on the difference in price. Example $10000 trade and a $30k car you pay taxes on $20k. Only had to pay them once.
If you live in town like I use to you paid both state and town taxes on cars, houses, boats etc.
VA blows
if you think about it the state does pretty well just on car sales tax... MD example...
You buy a car for $30k - you pay $1,500 tax
Trade it in on a new $30k car, difference is $15k - you pay $1,500 tax
Dealership resells car for $20k, new buyer pays $1,000 tax
Car is resold for $10k, new buyer pays $500 tax
Car is at end of life, state has picked up $3,000 in sales tax alone during the life of the car, an effective tax rate of 10%... I'm no economist and all the numbers are made up, but used cars are definitely good for the state.

Does the tax vary in % by county? Why is my 2002 S2000 tax almost $400?
