Default Career Change

Hey guys,

I want to change the path that my career is going right now. I am not satisfied with my current position as a Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial. There is nothing wrong with the company or the people I work with, but rather the type of work that I do. Its pretty much a sales job with a fancy title. I want to utilize my Finance degree more than learning about different products. Quite frankly, it is a bit of a waste of a Finance degree bc anyone can do this job. The job is great if you can make it and it also helps ALOT of people who have no idea what to do when it comes to finances.

I am looking for a much more technical analysis/research position where I can examine securites and companies. By that I mean I would be crunching their numbers, working with all the ratios, and seeing if it would be a good security to invest in or not. I want to work for a mutual fund, hedge fund, or a private equity firm. The reason for that is becuase they are dealing with insitutional investors who invest many millions, rather than individuals who have small sums to invest. I do not want to deal with strategies like dollar cost averagin, asset allocation, and such for small individual investors.

The reason for this post is to ask for help. Do any of you guys/gals know of anyone who can help me with my career change. I applied to ten different places already, it's a matter of waiting. I know this area is not the best place to be searching for such a job, but I would like to stay in this area if at all possible for the time being. I am looking for an entry level postion since I just graduated from GMU last December. Any help or advice woul be much appreciated. I know the job market is a bit tough, but I want to change jobs ASAP.

Thanks,

Dan

I'm in the same boat of wanting to change jobs b/c I'm not being challenged or am no longer intrigued w/ the work I perform. Good luck on your search

I know what you mean. The challenege at my current work is not the kind of challenge I am looking for. It is picking up the phone and calling random people which I have grown very tired of.

I would imagine you will be competing for a job with a lot of experienced people in that field right now but good luck in your search.

^ Yes, that is my feeling, too. My investment adviser told me his company is closing 23 offices, although none in this area. So those peeps, some with alot of experience I would think, will be looking. Also, my accountant's wife has a high-level banking job and is having trouble finding a position where they want to relocate in New England. It never hurts to make contacts, though. That's the way most get jobs. Good luck, Dan!!

Yea, it is rather tough competing with people who have experience especially when the market is in such a condition. The advantage I have though is that I would most likely be cheaper labor

Not that it's going to be helpful to you, but to give you an idea of the current job market conditions in the financial industry:

Luckily I'm not in Finance
