good muffler shop in the area
My first post, woohoo!
Anyway, I went to a meineke in Sterling today and asked about getting the resonator cut out. The guy quoted me $150!!
I said people on the s2ki forum who have done it have spent 20-40 bucks. His reply: It costs him 40 just to turn on the welder.
So I, too, would like to know about a quality place to get the resonator cut out without spending over 40 bucks.

I have thought about doing this also.
I would highly recommend the Meineke Shop on RT 50 just west of Fairfax Circle.

I have been going to them for years. It is owned by Chris Schmitz. Tell him that Matt Janowicz sent you.
Let me relay two stories about doing business with them:
1. A few years ago I did a pre-state inspection check on my 1988 Toyota 4 X 4 pickup and discovered that I had a small exhaust leak that would not pass VA state inspection. I took it back to this location where I had my Meineke muffler installed and there was a small pin-hole leak in the tail pipe after the muffler. They tack welded it at no charge. It passed inspection.
2. I was sitting waiting for them to finish replacing about my fifth muffler (life time warranty) on my old Honda Civic Si with almost a quarter of a million miles on it at the time. I customer came in to pick up his car. Chris informed him that the charge was going to be $28.60 to clean and adjust the parking brake linkage on the right rear. Mr. Kim (the customer) said: What? $28.60? Chris explained that the problem was caused by his parking brake linkage and that by cleaning and adjusting it, they had solved the problem that he was having and that it was the cause of the noise that he was hearing. After several exchanges, Mr. Kim (in dis-belief) reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an estimate from the Midas shop down the road for over $800.00. They had told him that he needed a major overhaul of his entire braking system.
3. I was sitting waiting for my car one day when Chris took a phone call and was giving someone directions on how to get there from Gaithersburg. I guess that in fairness to his other franchise owners he suggested that there were many other Meineke shops between Gaithersburg and Fairfax and questioned the female caller on why she was driving so far. She had been referred to them by a friend as well.
If you choose to use their services, I hope that you wind up being as satisfied dealing with them as I have been over the last decade or more. I will be interested in hearing about your experience.

It's not worth a legal claim for the $400-600 I'd get out of it, so I've given up on settling with the shop I took it to originally. However, I do want it to stop squeaking horridly and need an honest shop to take it to.
