A new cylinder block and a bare head will cost you roughly $1,300 each (this assumes a transplant of all valves, springs, cams, etc.).

Uh, I got a steal of a deal on a new, complete short block for just under $2k shipped some time ago(not from HTG; I happen to need one at the right time).

The problem probably lies in our respective definitions of a short/long block. I was quoting prices for just the blocks themselves, no valvetrain, cams, pistons, crank, etc.

A complete short block can be had for $1978.07 (+ shipping) here:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/j...ANSMISSION+ASSY.
A complete head is $2307.48 + shipping. That's under $4,300 for a new engine... not bad, all things considered.

If you don't mind used, $3,500 from HTG isn't too bad of a deal (though if I was replacing the entire engine I would seriously consider the used 2.2L for the extra $300).
