how to take OEM shift knob off?

loosen the locknut underneath the knob. unscrew the knob.

Done!

is it the hex screw, i don't want to strip it. is there a special tool to take it off?

Nope, you only need an open-ended or adjustable wrench! Unscrew the knob by turning it counter-clockwise while turning (or holding) the nut clockwise at the same time . Reverse the operation to put it back on

I just used an open end metric wrench - I forgot what size ... somewhere around 10/12mm

Mine came off very easily - just a quarter turn or so and the knob will unscrew...

what kind of knob are you getting? I put on one of the Muz countersunk knobs. I like the way it sits - very low.

put like a piece of cloth between the wrench and lock nut to protect it from being scratched though!
