Default I'm baaaaaaack!

Well, my thirst to get back into an S2K was finally quenched, because I just picked up a MY05 AP2! For the few older people who remember me, I used to have a berlina AP2, but sold it a couple of years ago and got a BMW 335i. I still have the 335i as my daily (although I might be getting rid of it for an SUV for my wife and taking her car as my daily in a few months, but that's another story) but the S2K is definitely my "weekend warrior."

Now for the catch. There seems to be a problem with the gas and temp gauges. For the first time in my life, I ran out of gas. The car wouldn't accelerate, then it just shut off on me. I tried to restart it, but it would sputter out and quit. Finally, it wouldn't turn over at all. I got a ride to a gas station and put a gallon in it on the roadside and it started up after a little coaxing. I was able to drive it to a gas station and filled it up, and it's running fine. I drove it home and restarted it a few times without issue. The problem is my gas gauge still had 4 bars, saying I had a little under a quarter tank when the thing cut out on me. Now that I've filled it up the gas gauge is reading full. So apparently 4 bars actually means empty now??? Also, my temp gauge never moved off of one bar past the cold side even though I drove it for over 30mins straight. I don't remember that from my prior AP2. This all has me a little confused.

To make matters more interesting, the previous owner has the AEM EMS running the car. It's still installed. Could that have anything at all to do with it? Unfortunately, I've never dealt with EMS.

So two questions really, 1.) does anyone have any idea what may have caused me to run out of gas while the gauge still showed 4 bars or the temp gauge not to have moved? 2.) Anybody know of a good local shop (in SOVA) with EMS experience so that I can get the car looked over to make sure everything is tuned and looks right? I just kinda want to give it a once over to make sure everything is fine. Tony, you still around?

Thanks in advance guys, and it's good to be back!

Hey Kevin, nice to see you back!!

As for the fuel issue... I'm would definitely think it has something to do with the EMS. There are always those little quirks with a standalone. Possibly a calibration issue? Not sure.

Either way, hopefully someone that understands the EMS will post. Have you posted this in the main section under "Modifications"? If not, I would try that.

Yes...welcome back Kevin. It was your original S2000 that got me into the game!

First off, the AEM EMS (assuming its not the new series 2 model) will not operate the engine temp gauge. The only way around it is either: the Modifry fix, a separate temp gauge, or upgrade the EMS to Series 2 model. Im running the EMS as well but I have gauges that monitor the temps. I also have the Modifry fix but I haven't installed it yet.

As for the gas gauge...only thing I can think is the previous owner swapped out the fuel pump and the tank sensor might be messed up. Removing the fuel pump is not the easiest thing and the floater that checks the fuel level can get bumped pretty easily.

Good to see you back though. Also, looking forward to this weekend!

What color did you get??

What's up man! I'm glad my old S2K got you interested. Now I'm back with a Silverstone just like yours, lol!

But thanks for the info on the EMS. To be honest, I've never dealt with this system and know nothing about it. All I know is that I have it on my car. It's the 30-1052 if that means anything to you. Is that the new one or old one? So it won't run my temp gauge without a special modification huh? Maybe that's also related to my fuel gauge issue too then. Seems I have a lot to learn about this system.

And yeah, our trip this weekend is gonna be a blast!

Yeah, maybe it is related to the EMS. Drew (Druz) seems to think so.

Anyone know of a good place around SoVA with EMS experience to get everything checked out?

EMS is a pretty popular setup so Im sure there is someone in the area.

The 1052 is the series 1. The Modifry fix is a fairly simple wiring fix that allows the stock gauge to work...but its about 60 bucks for the kit. Mine is just sitting around in my apartment so I probably would be willing to part with it.

My fuel gauge was not affected but there might be a calibration issue in the program itself. I just looked on my AEMPro software and couldn't find anything, but I'm not fluent with the program, so it might be there and Im not seeing it.

I elected to install the Modifry unit when I was still using the AEM. Works great and is simple to install. In fact, I'll be sending it back to him to have it reprogrammed to use with the stock ecu for more accurate readings.

Yeah, I'm thinking I might just do that too then. I'm glad it's a relatively easy fix. It sounds similar (at least in theory) to the interface you need to keep your stock radio controls with an aftermarket unit.

I assume the Modfry unit comes with instructions on how to connect everything?
