Well - looks like I am definitely purchasing a new computer.

Last night we had a terrible thunder storm in the Hampton Roads area. When I went to bed I had left my computer on. Around 11:40 pm I woke up to a loud bang and my computer screen was black. I had figured that we had a power surge, causing my computer to turn off. The monitor itself was still on, as were the speakers.

Well, this morning I tried to turn on the computer to no luck. The storm fried my computer. All of my S2Ki Meet Pictures and many others are all gone.

I have a surge protector on my computer, however it went through the telephone lines. My mothers television downstairs, as well as her new DVD player have both been fried as well.
if you want to send the computer over here i'll take the hard drive and transfer the info onto a DVD for you

If you go for that setup and choose Vista, do not do so without upgrading the RAM to at least 2GB (either from Dell or by purchasing an extra 1GB chip elsewhere, assuming that they're putting a single 1GB chip in).

<2GB and ista make for some

Yeah, the HDD may still be okay, it could be just the power supply and/or motherboard.

But for Pete's sake, just buy a system already This thread is getting too long without a purchase.

Honestly, I really appreciate that offer! I might be in contact over PM with you in regards to that. The only files I am really worried about are my pictures ... previous S2Ki events, friends / family, and previous cars.

Well... after doing a lot of researching, I have a feeling that in the very close future (next week) I'll be purchasing a MacBook

I've had 2 Dells (1 PC, 1 laptop) and 1 Compaq laptop with widescreen in the last 3 years and I'm shocked that the Compaq has outlasted/outperformed both of the Dells.

But after reading all of these comments, I too am going to look into the Macbook Pro.

Great information guys/gals!!

good choice.

My friend has a 17 inch mac book pro. I "borrowed" it for a week and I almost never gave it back after I finished my prank.

Think I might just go with a regular MacBook - stick with the 13" monitor. But now that I'm thinking about it, might go with a Pro since I don't have a home computer anymore. This is my only computer - no need to deal with a tiny monitor.
