Interesting, as my experience has been quite the opposite. Then again, a good deal of the applications I run can hog RAM, so perhaps it's a difference in usage.
I'm building a quad core with 2 gbs soon anyway.

I just pick up a Inspiron laptop from Dell through their scratch and dent outlet. These are brand new laptops that have some cosmetic defects. I paid $760.00 for a 1.86 Duo Core 2 processor, 2 GIG of RAM, 17" screen, 120 GIG harddrive (which is way more than what I needed) and a DVD/RW. These laptops are pre-configurated so, I would check the site a few times a day looking for something that I wanted. They add new laptops every hour or so.
FYI, I can not find any scratches or dents. What I did notice is the trim peices are white and the case is silver and that didn't matter to me.

The new x86 Macs are great. Using the Parallels software, you can run Windows applications right on your Mac OS X desktop, and you get a good user interface with a UNIX kernel (and if you're a nerdy type, a UNIX shell).
My only gripe is they're so expensive! I wanted at least a 15" laptop (and preferably a 17") and the 15.4" MacBook Pro was too expensive for what you got when I compared it with a similarly priced Dell.
The MacBook Pro I wanted would still today cost about $3000 today, where as a similarly spec'd Dell cost $1400 back in September '06, probably even cheaper today.
Also, I think their support sucks. My iPod HD has died 4 times now and I had to goto the "genius" bar at the Apple Store in Tyson's. I had to wait over an hour from when my appointment was (feels like I'm in a doctor's office), and listening to the "geniuses" troubleshoot problems tells me that they're morons, not geniuses. They were basically salesman, trying to get users to buy more software or more hardware and they never actually addressed problems. Their usual thing if there was a real problem was to box up the computer and ship it off somewhere. At least 4 people came in complaining of their screens being scratched by the keyboard when the laptops were closed too.
Dell support may not be same-day but I have been able to easily get replacement parts and do the work myself rather than have to depend on the "geniuses" at the Apple Store.
Maybe if the next gen MacBooks get a screen size bump and still go for about $1000, I will jump onto the Mac bandwagon.
Not sure on HP, but my cousin and 3 or 4 of his college friends have the same model laptop (not sure which one) and all of them have had nothing but problems with it. It maybe that particular model is bad though. I used to support Toshiba laptops awhile ago and wouldn't buy a Toshiba laptop based on my experience with their failure rates and their terrible support although it was a number of years ago that I supported them. I'd buy Gateway before I bought Toshiba.
