Don't let the NSX fool you, though it is an incredible offer and sounds like a great machine - it's a bit more than I'm looking to spend right now.

My goal right now is to stay in the $700 range, give or take a bit.

I'd go with #4 Circuit City, it has a slightly better processor and is the cheapest. Most if the specs are very similar across the last three links.
Ya@InlinePro also recommended this one... for mostly the same reasons. Stating that most of the features on the laptops are rather similar. Plus with the fact that I'm not using it for gaming, that processor should be just fine for my needs. Not to include the fact that it is the least expensive. Personally I'm not too familiar with the processors, however if you say it's better - then that's what I like to hear!

i used to work at radio shack while i was in college and i bought my laptop while i was there. only reason i got it there was for the 1 year no interest and i also got a discount. the computer works great for my needs but im pretty sure i could have gotten a dell with equal components for less even with the discount.

id say go with dell. people that i know who have purchased from them are satisfied with the purchase.

Yeah, but by then the laptop itself will probably be too slow to run those fancy Vista applications by 2010. And plenty of folks still use Office 2003 instead of Office 2007, and 2007 lets you save in 2003-compatible format.

For web browsing/moviewatching and IM, I think XP will serve Chad better for the life cycle of the laptop.
yes but who still uses windows 98 or windows ME? Hell the first version of windows 98 dosn't support mass removable storage (USB etc)

I've been laptop-only for the last five years... the most important lesson I've learned is, build-quality is paramount. I've used some fancy desktop-replacement type laptops at gigs before, all of which are now sitting in a pile waiting to be fixed when I have the time; my oldest no-frills laptop is still chugging along.

I would also recommend Lenovo... pretty solid, usually good specs for the price. One other thing to consider if you're buying it at a consumer chain retailer are reward points - I got my last one at Best Buy, and got a few free games & apps out of it through rewardzone points.

*cough* MacBook *cough*

I know it's more expensive, but it's a helluva machine for the money. And I guess you'd also have to buy XP... Eventually you'll just end up using the Mac side anyway, tho...

Hah, trust me I've wanted a Mac for a while. Don't have the cash to spend right now.

Thanks! To date I've yet to need any type of service to my desktop, so I'm hoping the laptop will be just as good. If that works out, then I wont really have much need for service advisers.

My girlfriend works at Radio Shack, which offers me an additional 10% discount. Plus I'm interested in the Sony Vaio a bit. She told me that she has them available - so I tossed that into the equation.

My desktop was purchased through Dell and so far I've been rather happy with the setup. Personally I am not too familiar with the difference in processors (AMD vs Intel), however it appears that the Dell setup has significantly less features than the competitors.

Thanks for the recommendation on Windows XP versus Vista - I'll make sure to do that! I believe though that with that I'll have to customize a laptop, since the other places have the computers shipped to them as is - not sure if they'll be willing to remove Vista, install XP, and reinstall all the other Office stuff.
go with Intel for the time being. The Core2Duo is killing everything. VAIO = Name only, the build is meh.
