Thumbs up MY00 to MY02+ top conversion

As some of you know, my S2 was recently in an accident. I have gotten the car back, and when I picked it up I noticed a cut in the convertible top. I have talked to the shop that did the repairs and the top is going to be replaced through insurance. I have been meaning to do the top upgrade for a while and was planning on doing it myself. The shop that did the repairs said if I could find someone that would do the conversion they would "contract" out to this shop.

Soooo..... has anyone had a shop (located in MD) do the MY00 to MY02+ glass top conversion?

If so, what shop was it and who was it that did the install?

I would appreciate any information on this.

Thanks!
Swan

I don't know of anyone who has done the conversion as I would be curious as well but I did go to a place in Annapolis to get my first top replaced... Your best bet is to go to an upolstery/boating place

You may be able to help a fellow Mid-Aer out (Tony - moparacker), who could use some money on the side to fix/convert your top.

It would be a little bit of a hassle as he lives in Virginia Beach, but he is experienced with the tops. He has converted Dave22's top, Black Nugget's, and repaired w1ngman's. Right now he is going to College, and doesn't have a full time job so I'm sure he could use some extra income......maybe he'll chime in here?

I was actually planning on contacting him before this whole accident happened. I would still be planning on paying him to help me do this if the insurance company wasnt going to be footing the bill.

Since this is the case, the shop would need another shop to do it because they would need paper work and such for the insurance company. Since he is not a shop, I don't see how this could work out???? (am i correct on this?)

The shop I'm at now said that if we cannot find a shop to do this and I am set on doing the upgrade then he can give me what is called an "appearence value". This is them basically paying me to live with the defect. They would only be shelling out $300 for that, which is a far cry from having the top replaced and installed.

J-
If my memory serves me right, I think I remember someone saying that a shop in annapolis was able to do the upgrade for them. I haven't been able to do any searches as I have been busy as hell recently. Ill see if I can find the thread I'm talking about......

I know I have been a little MIA recently, but I was out of the country and things have been crazy at work. I really appreciate the help though guys/girls.....

the shop you're at seems to be a little cocky...find a shop where you know someone. somewhere that they'll say they installed it, basicly gave you the money, and you can go get it installed elsewhere.

Don,

If you'd like I can find out who the shop was that did my top... they may have done the conversion already... Let me know. Honda sends all top problems in that area to that shop so I bet it is that one

I wouldn't call the shop cocky - it sounds to me like they don't want to get in trouble - by following the book.

If a shop were to do what you suggest, they would probably have to know you very well - like being an employee of the shop or friend/relative of the owner. It sounds to me like Swan's shop is doing everything they can to work with him.

I'm not getting how a shop is "cocky" if they're not willing to commit insurance fraud

Pointy...My first choice would be to take this to moparacker, and thats really what I want to do because I know the job will get done right. Although it's very hard for me to justify taking that appearence value check ($300) rather than having the whole thing covered. That's why I'm trying to find a shop that would do it.

In the meantime I've also been trying to figure out a way to have it fully covered and have moparacker do the work, but haven't been able to come up with much....

J- If you get a chance I would appreciate it if you could shoot me a PM with the information on the shop you went to and the name of the guy who did the work (if you can remember)

Anybody else know of any other shops???
There has to be one out there that has done the conversion.....
