New Guy Looking for S2000.. Help Please?
We had a member do a full rebuild of a salvaged car a couple years ago. The car looked amazing (red with tan interior) and everything was repaired well. When he needed to sell it, he couldn't give the car away. After all that time, energy and money going into the rebuild he was forced to part out the car to get any money out of it. Unfortunate, but people don't want headaches and you never know what you're going to get with a car like the one posted.
Keep in mind insurance on a salvage car can be problematic. Some companies might only allow you to insure it as liability. Should something happen to the vehicle, you could be out a lot of money. Best of luck to you.

I actually bought some parts off of that guy when he was parting it out. It look immaculate, but he couldn't get it registered. He got to drive it once at the track. When I went to buy some parts all that was left was the shell, the bolts were in a pile. I bought his Socal Special exhaust too, but never got to put it on.
Your looking at 15k to make this car drivable. IMO at the right price this car would be an investment for selling the parts off of it. Not as a repair for reasons stated earlier. Save yourself the headach and just buy my S

15k no wayy ur exagerating. I bought many salvage cars and fix them myself and they can be fix. A salvage car can be as be as good as any S2000 out there. However, you must check the car first in PERSON!!!!!!!!and see the damage so look underneath to side you name it look at it well. Sometimes insurance may put a salvage title on a vehicle for a hit fender and the car can be put back in the road in no time. Sometimes its very serious like the frame might be bend. If the frame is bend of course I have a frame machine I do the work myself but if you dont it will cost you extra nontheless you must look at the car in person see the damage with you own eyes go to a autoshop and ask how much will it be. Seeing that S2000 with my experience it will be sold for at least 4000 dollars so this is my math
S2000 4000
fender 150
suspension 160
bumper 150
headlight 150
paint 200
brakets 100
wheel stock 100
frame repair 1500 exageratin I will do it for 600 bucks
SALVAGE paper work around 400 dollars
Total expend 6910 Total not bad for a 63k S!!!
My advice do your work get the frame fix and put the parts yourself. S2000 are easy cars to work. Some people that dont know about fixing salvage cars, will always exagerate on the price and sure a salvage car will have its price devalue but if you plan to keep this car for yourself go for it. If you want to sell it you will have a hard time. And dont worry about insurance as long as you pay them they all good!!!
PS: Go to local autobody shop and you will be amazed on how much they will fix any car.

It's easy to fill someone's head with a lot of BS low ball numbers like this, but it really doesn't help the OP & could lead to him making a terrible mistake. You haven't seen the car in person & your going to write an estimate like that? In reality you are not going to fix his car, sight unseen for these prices. If you are, than you are a fool. Your parts & materials prices are very low & incomplete. Anyone in business isn't going to be in business long throwing out numbers like that. I can rebuild the engine in your car for $300.00. Am I going to do that? No. Because it won't be done correctly & I won't be in business next month if I do. When it comes to something like this, you really are going to get what you pay for.
I deal with several high end body shops & I would say for this repair, your looking at a minimum of 10K plus and cashing in a "favor". It would be a stupid investment. I looked at several cars in the 8K and under price range. None were perfect, but all ran & drove & didn't need any major surgery. Save your money & wait until the fall, convertibles are always cheaper right before winter.
I have had my "experience" with a salvage title car. An Acura RL that I picked up cheap that just needed a little work. After putting a lot of time & money into it I tried to sell it. Beautiful car, I fixed everything, not a problem with it at all. 90 days later, after lowering the price a number of times, we started parting it out. It was worth more in pieces, was almost worthless as a whole. Lesson learned.
Insurance is going to be an issue. Some companies won't insure a salvage title car at all. None that I contacted would insure them for anymore than basic liability. Do your research & be patient. Dumping 10K into something that is essentially worthless if it is stolen, wrecked or just trying to be resold just isn't good business.
If you are still interested, make sure you take someone with you. Make sure this person is qualified to give you a realistic opinion of the severity of the damage. This will not be a cheap repair, unless you do the work yourself & even then you have to ask yourself if it is worth it?
Patience my friend... Patience
So between you guys and some friends. I have decided to not buy the car. I decided to not look at it so I won't be tempted. Your right it is just not worth the risk at this point. I am thinking what will be best for me is to look for one with high mileage, that way I can fulfill my dream of working on the engine and whatever else may need to be done without the hassle of the title.
Experience wise since I was not clear, my first car was a 1995 Civic that I took apart with my father and rebuilt the engine, then a 1997 Civic before I landed with my Ford Contour SVT I drive now. So yes I am mechanically inclined, but in no way would I claim to be an expert.
