And yet somehow people are still getting scammed at an alarming rate (even in person, as the recent seat debacle thread indicates). And how many arrests have been made due to the credit card or IP information released by the board? Would none be a correct figure? We couldn't even get that one scammer who lived in El Paso arrested, and he jacked quite a few people (including the board's owner!) for $10k+ in total, and we had everything from a picture of him to his address to his license plate and phone numbers. In theory, it sounds like a great benefit, and I truly applaud the idea, but let's be realistic and not parade this is a realistic benefit to the members here. It's a scare tactic against scammers, nothing more, and everyone here knows it, including the scammers (prove me wrong, show me a single case). Which, if anything, boils it down to nothing more than a reason to extract money from members without no real benefit (and wouldn't a false sense of security be considered a bad thing?).
Has having the badge been advertised as a fraud prevention device? If so, I'm unaware of that. If anything, it's about fraud deterrence. That's all anyone can do. If you have a home alarm system, that doesn't mean the company promises you won't be the victim of burglary... it just means that hopefully you'll get a little more sense of security knowing it's there, and maybe its presence will make it easier for the authorities to locate a potential crook. Of course people who have badges can turn out to be scammers. It's just that the chances are likely lower that a badge holder will be a scammer than a random individual with no badge, that's all. It's one thing among many that you can use as a tool to decide if you want to buy from someone you don't know... and even then, you still cross your fingers and hope you don't get burnt.

If this is really about what you get for your money now vs. what you used to get for free back then, that makes this whole subject extremely easy. Call it inflation, call it overhead, call it a tax... whatever you want. Things change, and prices go up sometimes. We as consumers have to decide whether or not the price hikes will cause us to change our behavior. It looks like the fact that you're being asked to pay for something you used to have for free bothers you to the point of changing your behavior. So be it. I personally don't see it as being a big deal at all. In fact, I would pay $20/year if it were required to simply have access to the boards, although I realize to many people that might be extreme. But as long as this is the premier website for the S2000, it is worth at least that to me.

I have been staying quiet on this, but I feel like I need to add my 2 cents before the day is over. I do remember when a badge was just a badge to identify where you are from. That is how it is used in other regions. Personally that is what I think it should be. The ruling party a few years ago decided that it should be used to police the local membership. Personally, I never agreed with the idea that it should be a way to identify you to be trustworthy, because honestly it means nothing. We have had many issues with "Badged" sellers/buyers and it creates a false sense of security IMHO.

Do I want to support this site, yes. Is someone making money off of us members? Probably, but that is capitalism, get over it. People should be paid for their work. The benefits for having a membership aren't what they used to be but you still get something for your money, if its worth it should be up to you.

Overall, I badges don't really mean anything. If I had my choice they would just be a way to identify where you are from in the main forums.

you're my hero.
