I have a question about this. After valves have been adjusted, it is a bit noiser? I noticed I can hear the valves a bit since the adjustment. I was told they were very tight and now that they are within spec, the valves can be heard. Any thoughts? I know the F20/22s tend to be on the louder side so I'm not sure I have a validated concern.

Awesome write-up Rob. Even though my car is low mileage I'm still tempted to want to do this. I'd love help from someone that's done it before although I must say your write-up is extremely thorough and in reading it I actually thought I could probably pull it off on my own. I'd just like to have someone that knows what they are doing looking over my shoulder to stop me just in case I start to do something stupid.

Steve, the hardest part about the job is leaning over your engine bay. It's a back breaking job.

With a write-up like Rob has I'd be inclined to agree. Detailing the hood can be just as bad. Trying to lean over and apply some pressure for an extended period of time.

I don't know about the valve noise after an adjustment since this is my first adjustment on the S. It does make sense though. Valves clearances do usually "tighten up" (smaller clearance) with wear. As the valves bang up and down the valve face and seat smack each other and eventually wear down so the valve seats deeper into the seat which raises its stem toward the cam--so tighter clearance.

If your valves were tight then opening up the gap to specs could cause a little more noise as the rocker "strikes" the valve stem harder with the wider gap.

I think that's when the shocks tower brace will help .

Thanks for the insight. I was concerned for a minute because it was noisier but I have talked to Billman about it as well and he said it shouldnt sound really noisey, but should have a slight tap to it as you go through the RPM range.

Very good write-up. My car is near 105K miles now and I'm thinking about doing this with a friend.

I also used your test pipe write up to change a bad cat.
