Edmunds Inside Line just did an article on Summer vs All Season vs Winter tires in three conditions dry, wet and snowy. http://www.insideline.com/features/tire-te...-vs-summer.html

Summary: Avoid driving on summer tires in the snow...they suck.

I had no issues when I had those r comps on the winter. It was scarier when it was raining

In February 2003, I found out something I had never known or could've imagined: S-02's will "freeze." When they did, I could not go straight at anything over 20 mph. It was a long(and tense) ride home from the VA Beach area. I-95 was down to a single lane of traffic that resembled cross-country skiing tracks.

If you MUST drive every day during the winter and you have no other means of getting around the couple of days that would be treacherous, then go with Mani's suggestion and actually get snow tires. If you get by the couple of days by either not driving or driving a different vehicle/getting a ride, then all-seasons are fine. Mind you, where you live makes a big difference. Down here in Fredericksburg we don't get much, if anything, from northern winter storms, but heaven help us when it comes from the south.

You had r-compounds? What tire exactly?

BTW, Memo to OP:

If you follow my suggestion, I hold no responsibility if you die. Tell your family to direct all lawsuits at the intarwebz.
