I did 5 consecutive ASYMCA Mud Runs (missed this year's though) and believe I'm in pretty good shape (can do a 5K in just over 25 mins) and I wouldn't even attempt the Tough Mudder. I know that's far beyond my limit. 10,000V of electric shock? Cold water dives in 50F weather? Yeah, no. Usually by around mile 4 of the Mud Run I start cursing and wishing I'd never signed up... the Tough Mudder is on a completely different level.
I want to see what my family and friends have to say. I have seen people who are as fit as the average American, with no gym time or workout schedule, complete the Tough Mudder. I think the obstacles would be awesome but I wouldn't be crazy about the distance. Friends have said its about 1/2 mile at a time and then a several minute wait per obstacle. That wouldn't be so bad, but still.

I have never done the Mud Run locally, I've heard its essentially a soft sand run with a couple of weak elements. I hate soft sand runs. I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit on the Mud Run, I've heard its a giant PITA.

I've done a couple X-Corp Adventure races in the last couple months and they are pretty sick.
The local ASYMCA Mud Run at Little Creek is 5 miles long, about 3.5 of it through sand. It sucks. But for some reason I keep signing up for it. The hardest part of the course is at the very end too, which is kind of a cruel twist, because you're running over sand dunes and under obstacles when you're gassed. The obstacles are nothing like what the Tough Mudder looks to be, but then again, if there's about a half mile of running with a long wait for obstacles, maybe it isn't quite as bad as I was thinking. Still though, almost none of those obstacles look like any fun to me. I can't see a Tough Mudder in my future.

I guess all of those who ran it are done now. I haven't heard of any fatalities, so that's a good sign.

I finished.

Hardest thing any of us had ever done in our entire lives. Thats 3 Rugby players, 3 Active Force Recon Marines, 1 Navy Diver and 2 cops, hardest thing ANY of us had ever done.

There was not a single flat section of the course, miles up and miles down!

So my trip, first 4.5 miles were hard as shit, but no injuries. Right at 4.5 on the "Slip and slide from hell" I gashed the hell out of my hand... 3 inches long, over 3/4" deep. Bleeding incredibly badly, just my whole arm soaked in blood. So much blood it was washing the mud off. I had to hike about a mile like this to the nearest aid station, they got me back up to the top. Cleaned up the wound, glued it shut, and 5 stiches. They gave me two bags of fluids (IV) to replace the blood I lost, and told me to sit out the rest. About 10 minutes later, I was on my way back down to were I stopped to finish up the race.

Finished the rest of the course, hard as hell, just straight up and down. I was fairly light headed, and had to nurse my hand over the obstacles, but I finished! Now I am just sore, bruises over my entire body, ready to go to sleep. About to pass out!

FYI:Any questions or mispellings, or more are going to have to wait till tomorrow. I am barely functioning.

^ Congrats for sticking it out and finishing. Also thank you for further solidifying the fact that I won't do this thing. I had about a dozen people on my FB yammering about about the Tough Mudder and it almost got me ready to say eff it, I'll do it next year. Your post brought me back down to earth.
