You're talking about DJ, not AAPL right? Been awhile since AAPL was at $35... (although really not that long in the scheme of things). And yah, not really sure why DJ buyout rumors spiked it's value... From the news corp end everyone hates it, probably because they figure tabloid journalists make less and sell better...

I guess it's just optimism for a quick buck. DJ has been limping along for years now and doesn't want to sell, so NWS is going to have to pony up a premium.

Yes DJ. I'd never short AAPL. I might buy puts on volatility but I'd never outright short it. For example a good trade "might" be to buy some puts about a week ahead of the iPhone release. Unfortunately there are a lot of people going to be making this trade and the price of those puts will likely be too high to make it pay.
