For long-term returns history has shown that you really can't beat an S&P500 index fund - no load, almost no taxes, and you don't have to worry about who the fund manager is. Just put your money in and leave it there for 30 years.

So far I've been working with an Edward Jones adviser, and I've been buying a lot of Van Guard stuff. How would I buy some of this S&P? Would he be able to sell it to me?

^^^ Vanguard basically invented the S&P500 fund. But other companies run them now too. Go with whichever has the lowest load/fees.
You can buy an S&P 500 index fund. Or you can also buy the SPDR that tracks the S&P 500 too:

You can buy the SPDR and trade it just like any individual stock.

I'm wrestling with the question of, why pick the S&P 500 versus, say, the Russell 2K or 3K? Seems to me the Russell indicies have a better chance of average returns than the S&P. Am I wrong?
I'm in the S&P 500 in my 401K but only because I have no Russell choices. I'm thinking of setting aside more post-tax income for retirement and I'll be able to make the choice then.
