I have absolutely no need for a 500k house in Texas while being single regardless of income, in other parts of the country things may be different. My income has risen singificantly and I still pay <$350 in rent just as I did in college. 4k a year in housing costs is worth much more to me than a big fancy house right now. I'm looking at lower priced houses in the near future once I think my area has roughly bottomed. Compared to most people in my position I "save" enough in housing to pay for my motorcycles cash.

It gets you a fully furnished, wood flooring, cable tv/internet included, 2-2 if you know where to look in Austin, TX (southside a mile out of downtown).
I recently moved to a nicer area and am paying more than that [480] mostly so I don't worry about my vehicles getting stolen and because it's 4 miles from my work.

$350 in San Diego gets you a fancy cardboard box
$480 might get you a room in a house with a bunch of roommates somewhere not desired
tv/internet is another $100
