Yeah, here in Westport, we get very little in the way of town services. But, that's the way I like it because I only pay about $1300/yr in taxes on two acres/house. In the surrounding towns, that would be about $2500/yr.
Whoa!!! WTF $1300 I thought you guys paid a lot of taxes up there? Shiet I got a little hole in the wall 2 bedroom and paying like $4400 this next year. We got re-evaluated this year and will have 20% increases for the next 5 years till we get taxed on the full assessment.

I with Steve, Pay for Play but in the end taxpayers will revolt because the poorer people will disportunately pay more than richer. WOW did I just say that. Steve your turning me into a democrat. Stop this nonsence at once!!!

There can be a lot to learn from those in the projects on how to get the most out of the system...

For example, with gas prices so high and the lines so long at the hospital these days, just call an ambulance. Don't waste your own gas and get right into the ER without waiting!!! A while ago, a lady called 911 with an in-grown toenail. The fire department had to transport her by policy.

YOU PAID FOR IT!!!

behavioral psychologists ( as well as my old boss) will tell you rewarded behavior is repeated. it's part of the learning process.
she took the path of least resistance and it worked. it's no different than a monkey pulling the yellow lever to get a banana.

had they triaged the patient correctly and parked her in the hall for 4 days with no food, she probably wouldn't do it again.

the downside to public (ware)housing, is you take a large group of individuals with limited skill sets not to mention resources and in some cases a tendency to take the path of least resistance and clump them together geographically. The mechanism is now in place for them to share 'societal norms' such as "how to get to the hospital" which many of us find appalling.

I was waiting in line at the ER last year (a buddy on mine had seriously hurt his foot in a construction accident), and this woman in front of us turned to her friend and said "if they make me wait, I'm gonna have you bring me down the street to CVS and I'll call the ambulance. I'll get taken right in that way." She had a freaking cold!!

as a side note I found a great way to get immediate attention at the emergency room.

as you walk in slowly be hunched to one side with your hand on your back clutching your kidney. you immediately get put on a stretcher and run out back for drugs.

of course if you haven't got kidney stones it's probably not a real good idea

Or try, chest pain, can't breathe, or vision disturbances, those work quickly too. However, once they determine your problem in that ingrown toenail, be prepared to wait. Better pack a lunch before heading out too.

When my appendix attacked, I found that looking 1/2 dead and gray and then having blood pressure of 80 over 40 got me right to the front of the line.
