Default Computer question

A friend has AOL, and just switched to Verizon DSL, for her connection and is keeping AOL.

She had some problems at the beginning, which supposedly are fixed. I think she got some bad tech advice and weird things are happening. Now, whenever she turns on her computer, internet explorer automatically starts up. So does her AIM messenger. (I know how to change that one for her.)

Is there a setting somewhere she can change so that Internet Explorer does not start up? I have looked and can't find anything, so I'm sure I'm not looking in the right place.

I just made the same changes to my Mom's computer switching her to DSL with AOL, and did not run into that problem.

In the Start menu, go to "Programs", "Startup" and then delete the IE shortcut. Hope this helps!

Which version of Windows is she using?

Try Start>Programs>Startup Folder and see if it is there.....delete it.

You could also uninstall the AOL stuff.

I think she must be using XP, fairly new computer. She wants to keep the AOL and sign on directly to AOL. Even if she deletes theInternet Explorer shortcut key from the start menu, would that stop an "auto log on", as that is how she is describing it.

Maybe she needs to do a "re-install" of AOL making it her default?

AOL does not always "play nice with others", that much I know.

close IE and open aol - - this should work

I'll call her and have her give it a try.

Most likely, you won't need anything in the start up menu if it's a home computer. You can "cut & paste" what ever is in the start up menu to your desktop, reboot and see what happens. If it is a negative result, just put them back in.

If none of the above suggestions work, you could look as msconfig. Very useful to see what programs and services are loading at boot time.

Hope this helps.
