Default Deck treatment

OK...so I stained my pressure treaded lumber deck 2 seasons ago.....and I'm about 50% powerwashing it. It got real ugly this winter...lots of green and dirt.

I'm going for LOW maintenence....anyone use Thompson water seal? Other products? I'm looking for ease of application. restaining was long and messy. I thought that waterseal stuff was just a paint on.

Any thoughts?

Thomson is awesome. There is only 1 thing to watch out for. In will shed 100% of the water that touches it. We found out the hard way that this will freeze solid in the winter and turn the deck into a skating rink.

A few trys and we learned out lesson. But we got some sore tailbones along the way.

we did one of the home depot 5 yr sealers. If i recall correctly it was behr premium.
two years later it looks like crap again but only in the areas that get sunshine.
to be fair the deck is older.
but I'm not sure low maintenance isn't just an illusion.
If I had it to do over I'd use synthetic decking but I didn't want to replace 1400 sq ft of decking.

"fake" decking FTW

Jeff, we have used the Thompson's on the just demolished deck as well as our front brick steps. It goes on like water, and surfaces will bead up. I can't say we stuck with the program after the first couple of years.

It's a PIA.

Has the stained surface of the deck, faded? Will power washing and Thompson's give it an OK look, or will it look like peeling paint? You could try a "tinted" bleaching oil to give it a bit of a stained look it you want. We have used that on our shingles to get the gray color.....

Thompsons is a good brand, it's a good product.

I have to say, the best way to apply it is with a pesticide sprayer, works awesome!

I started with the sprayer but it didnt put out enough sealer and I was half bent over the whole time. Pure misery.
