Bigboost, your point about planning on OT to pay the bills has some merit. OT is always subject to change. Though it may not be the wisest financial move, folks (including non police officers) include those wages for bill paying purposes, and banks accept the wages when folks apply for loans. My son and his wife depend on Sunday OT to pay the bills. They too would have an issue if that changes. Folks who work on commission count on their commission to pay the bills. It's what their paycheck is. Sure it's subject to change, but then so again is having any paycheck these days.

However, your generalization on the law enforcement guys, their reasons for putting in the time, and the state of their marriages is a real broad stroke. You think all cops are lazy, sitting in their cruisers, cheating on their wives kind of guys? You're very wrong.

If you ever need some help from law enforcement, and they knew of your feelings towards them, they'd probably like to tell you how they feel about you, but they wouldn't. They would show up and help you, or your family member, because it's their job.

It's OK bigboost, no one thinks any less of you because you couldn't pass the civil service test. Better luck next time.

By the way, the last time they were doing layoffs in 2003, I was like only 10 from the bottom of the seniority list and was sure to lose my job. I said the same thing then that I say now about not taking a pay cut. Stand for something, or you will fall for anything I guess.

And steve hit it on the head, I don't need or want a GF, I have a hot wifey and two great kids. The reason I work so much is to try to give them a better life than I had. Spending a boat load of coin on toys is nice too. So glad I made the right career choice! Even more happy that Obama and Biden love cops and are going to throw money at us for the next eight years.

Anyway, I gotta go get ready for work. I pulled some overtime on the East Main St. walking beat tonight. Such a tough job this will be! I will have to walk up and down East Main St., stop to have a coffee and talk to some junkies on the corner about how they are doing. It's a crying shame that they only pay me $45/hr to do it. Gonna have to talk to my union about this travesty!

Oh and boost, thanks for all your tax dollars! I understand you aren't satisfied, so here's your share of the refund...

Hey Jeff,
looks like the republicans killed the 5 billion to support local police and fire departments support.
wasteful spending, not a stimulus.

I'm not quite sure how... but I'm pretty sure that's Obama's fault in some way.

Then the new mayor, in the middle of a financial disaster has all new carpeting and bathrooms and lighting installed in his 6th floor office costing an arm and a leg.

He has hired several cronies in extremely well paying jobs he just had to create. and doubled the salaries of his five lawyer legal staff to $85k each. BTW, these lawyers are all PART TIME workers (listed at 22hrs a week) and also recieve full health benefits in addition to their salary and also have private practices...

The list of waste goes on....

But, who takes the hit? The working stiffs in the PD, FD and DPW who can least afford it. And, just as importantly, the citizens who will become the victims of robberies, burglaries and just about any other crime you can imagine at a greater rate due to a basically un-effective police presence.

thats why I say the pols made the mess.
Jeff,

Hiring cronies or/and doubling their salaries is very important for politicians. They are counting on these people's political donations in the next election.

It is a no brainer. They are not spending their money.

Our governor has been doing this since he got in the office.

Not many people knows about these kinds of tricks and not many people care.

"Together we can......................"

getting screwed that is.

It's OK. with all the layoffs they will have to hire OT. Between that and all the summer details with no one to take them, we'll be fine

BTW: how's the engineering job market these days?

And start looking at a way to reduce our trade deficits! Too much of our work has been sent across our borders.
