We're still on basic cable with extended channels, and I biatch about spending that much to watch TV as there's nothing to watch except reality shows. We don't have Tivo. We still use a VCR/DVD and no the clock is not flashing 12:00. We get our movies from Net Flix, and don't even have a cable box in the house. Guess we're truly

Steve, I'd probably have a hard time figuring out how to watch TV in your house.
I cannot stand the reality shows. I love movies and sports, which is why I went all out for the movie and sports channels. Since I have been spending allot of time at home I generally watch one movie a day, sometimes two. And instead of the dreaded VCR, I can record on the new DVR so I can time shift those programs I do like. You can record 2 shows while watching another.
I may never use all those features, but they came with the high def box, another bonus.

Unfortunately no. I pay $30 a month for internet access via fios.

Right now Verizon owns it all, phone, tv, internet, and cell phones. I know I will have sticker shock when the first bill hits, but now it will be one check with a bigger number instead of 4 smaller ones. As I mentioned I was way too redundant with Directv and Comcast, so I saved a few bucks by bundleling it all.

[QUOTE=Crisis,May 17 2007, 11:41 AM] I have the same setup as Lainey, minus the extended channels.

I win... I don't even have a TV yet. When I do gather enough money for the ridiculous one I want, I don't have any plans for cable at all. My theory is I can grab HD off the air for free and either download the other stuff (off a borrowed connection) or do the Netflix thing.
Erick- That's what I'm doing right now. I have basic cable $15. I have a MCPC (Vista Ultimate) hooked up to my plasma in full 1080i and it has a tv tuner that will pick up all of the un-encriped HD channels ch 2-13. I then down load HD videos via torrents. I just go done watching The Departed last night from a torrent that I downloaded.

Another cool thing about having a PC hooked up to you TV is I have all of the original NES and Sega Genesis games on my hard drive and I use the xbox 360 controllers to play them. Plus I'm saving about $130 a month.

Just got rid of Comcast and Directv for FiosTV.
I tried to get Directv hd but my neighbor's trees block all the hd satelites. They tell you, you need a southern exposure, that is not accurate in New England. You need a South West exposure in order to get Directv and you need a pretty large span to get all 5 satelites. Well, my neighbor is a nice guy but cutting down his trees is not an option (unless Bass shows up with his husky).
Comcast is ok, but I thought I would give fios a try. On the hardware side it is much different. When the Verizon guy showed up he informed me that I had to change my router that I use for internet access. He installed a nice 4 port, wireless router that also connects your cable boxes to it via the fios box outside your house. That is a neat trick, now I can see my cable boxes on my router's maintenance screen. So it is all connected together. Nice...... since I can now download a movie on my pc and send it to my cable box for watching, slick.... Or I can record something with the dvr box they installed and send that to any tv in the house for viewing, nice touch. So now I also have a wireless network, bonus.

As far as picture quality they appear to be indentical. I think that once you get to the high def environment the pictures at 1080i look identical. So far it looks good and I end up saving $68 per month (having two services was expensive and redundant). Glad I did it.
Fios is really cool

The light is so clean it's Plus 20db Hot.. True Quam

I with I could get FIOS here.. verizon is a horrible company, but FIOS is sweet.
Verizon only offers FIOS to certain "profitable" areas in specific towns they select where they think they can sell the product. They are spending a tremendous amount of money to get the FIOS product out, and from what I've heard, they are starting to realize that the money spent will not be recovered for a long long time (like we predicted a few years ago), and are now starting to rethink the FIOS launches. As far as speed for HSI, for NOW, there is an advantage with FIOS over cable, but unless your a gamer, you don't need it. As far as picture quality, it's about the same. If picture quality gets any better it won't matter anyway, as the human eye can't tell the difference. Fiber to the house is overkill at this point, and very expensive to build, which eventually the customer will pay. Who knows, it may be needed in the furture as we couldn't imagine the bandwidth used now 10 years ago when it was just analog RF for video. And yes I am a Comcast employee

I need Fios in Melrose. I hate comcast. They have raised rates twice so far this year. They claim the first rate hike wasn't right so they had to correct it by doing it again. I can't believe they pull this crap. Their quaclity of service is fine, but their pricing sucks.
