Easiest is to put a new belt on it and then do a compression test and leakdown.

Second way is to remove the cams and use a dial indacator to check the valve stem heights .
I think the belt is broken as the cams are not turning. I took off the valve cover and cranked it and the cams just sat there. The weird thing is, when I looked in through the oil fill hole, I could see the cam turning. So I did an check for spark, but the distributor was not firing regularly. I'd get one spark, then nothing. Then I heard a series of loud clicks, then no spark at all. So I looked at the cam again, and this time it wasn't turning with the engine. So I pulled the cam cover and the belt looked like it was in place, but when I cranked the engine, the cams just sat there and the belt really didn't move. I'm wondering if the tensioner broke or something.

Anyway Scott, since I heard that series of loud "clicks" does that mean the valves got bent, or can they somehow survive that? It sounds like I have to do a lot of work just to find out if the head needs to come off. It might be better to sell the thing as a parts car.

most likley the belt did not break but you stripped the teeth off of it from age .

Cranking the motor was not the right way to check things when trying not to provoke more damage .

I am not one to asume .. so I can not give you a answer on what the clicks where .

^It was strange, Scott, because at first the cams were turning, so I thought I was good on that issue. So then I went to check spark and that was when I got the strange occasional firing that was inconsistent with the cranking speed. As I was investigating that problem, I heard the clacking noise. So then I looked in the oil fill hole agian and the cam was not turning.
