Just got done siding the house and re-doing the porch. Super nice now and can be used year round. Only thing is now the future wife wants to put a 2nd story on the house. BUT I JUST RE-ROOFED!!! I guess there is somehow a way to JACK UP the roof and re-use it! So maybe we aren't to bad off.

Now I guess eventually I will need to get an architect to do the plans up for the whole thing. Anybody know of one?

where's Glenn
what did you use for siding?

and did you do it yourself?

I did a cedar impression style. LOOKS AWESOME! It actually goes on just like regular siding but doesn't look like it. This one actually really has some serious TEXTURE to it not just like a flat fine look. I had the pro's do it because we had to put furring strips on the house. So they had to fire with a .22 nails into the cement block house. This way they had something to nail into!

Now most upscale renovations are returning less than 70% of their cost, according to a recent survey from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and Remodeling magazine.
My home improvements would probabley not be considered upscale...

Yes indeed this can be done. My parents added a second story to a house they owwned near the 1,000 Islands. It was a big project, but it saved in the long ron because they did not have to tear off the old roof and then turn right around and build a new one.

i bet a new roof would be cheaper than to somehow remove the roof - add a second floor and re-install the roof

also i could not even imagine how heavy an asphalt roof would be and they type of crane that would be needed

another factor to be considered, is the expense consistent with the rest of the property?

using a crack house as an example:
you've managed to get rid all of the dead bodies and are trying to clean up the place, so you can flip it and get out.

your probably not going after gold plated fixtures and Algerian granite with pre-cambrian fossils in relief.

on the flip side. you got 3.5 mil into 'fixer upper' in Weston. I'm guessing that your not headed off to the grossmans outlet for a precut Formica counter with minor flaws from the bargain bin.

Actually, it was very easy, my father is an engineer, he did it with the help of Mom and 1 other worker, and it was not a small roof. There was no crane involved, just lots of really big jacks.

On another house project we jacked up the entire house by 4' so we could put a decent crawl space under it and get a better view of the lake. That one was funny though because the house shifted about 1.5" closer to the road, just due to the electrical lines still being attached, they were powerless, but still connected.

Oh, I just remembered, we did use a crane on one project, we picked up and moved an entire pole barn.
