How important is AWD in the winter
I'm in the market for a new car and since I'm moving to the Boston area, and I know it likes to snow. I was wondering what you think. Currently, these are the two options at the top of my list. One is front wheel drive and the other is AWD. Although, I'm also considering a TL.
Acura TSX
Audi A4 Quattro
Thanks!

I've lived in this area all my life... well... basically
First car: Rear Wheel Drive
Second car: SUV, Rear Wheel Drive, Partial 4x4
Third car: SUV, Rear Wheel Drive, Partial 4x4
Fourth car: SUV, Rear Wheel Drive, Partial 4x4
Fifth car: Front Wheel Drive.
4x4 was hardly ever used in any of my past cars. If it was used... it was to pull another car out of a ditch
Off roading in the mountains, Sand Dune driving, and an occational free for all in a parking lot that hasn't been plowed yet durning a major snow storm
All Wheel Drive is nice. But not really needed in my opinon.

I made it through the 3rd worst winter in Worcester history with my '97 Accord Coupe, WITH severely worn tires without any problem (unless it was self induced with the hand brake
)
I'm loving the TSX/TL....I'd bet the TSX has higher fun factor. I drove a TL, it was nice, but I was suprised at the TQ steer. One of these may be the next beater when the S is paid for.

It'll get you going more easily on ice/packed snow. It will keep you going in soft surface conditon, e.g., soft sand or moderate amounts of fresh snow. It won't help you stop or turn in icy situaions.

AWD is a nice OPTION....but not need.
Also depending on your overall needs.
Do you have family/kids? It would be nice not to worry about snow or spending time to shovel out your driveway or spot. But if you are going with a FWD you shouldn't have any problem.(with proper tires)
I have been driving my 2000 328i for the last five winter with Pirelli210 snowsport without any major problem except for snowstorms greater than 10 inches.(110,000miles)

FWD is just fine in the snow w/ the right tires. It shouldn't be a sole deciding factor in picking a new car. I think TL as a daily driver is hawt!
