I've been pricing out what it would take to take my self-built x86 box to something current (old 1.8 Athlon now) and basically it's going to need:

New motherboard
New CPU + cooler
New memory
New Video card
New HD (because I will need SATA).

So basically the only thing I don't need to buy is a new case and power supply. It's cheaper to sell the old one and then just outright buy a whole new one. Nuts.

back in the day it was cheaper to build your own PC from scratch but not anymore!

depends on what range machine your buying/building.
at the low to middle end, you can't compete with the economy of scale the big boys are buying at.

If your building a high end machine it still is advantageous to do your own.
you won't get the same level of slick tight packaging integration the big boys engineer in though.

Shopped at Lowes, bought some new 6 panel closet bi-fold doors, new baseboard and door casings for the kitchen and hallway, new aspire gfci receptacles and light switches for the kitchen. New paint for the kitchen and master bedroom.

The new guestroom is now finished it has a new bamboo floor which is gorgeous, all new aspire electrical outlets, new window dressings and wood blinds, new closet doors, and a new bed and all new quilt and linens. Yay Im glad that room is finally done Ooops maybe not have to find the perfect ceiling fan for it than it wil be done.

Today I installed things, next is 6 panel doors for the hallway, kitchen and living room one will be 6 panel oak and 7 will be solid 6 panel pine. Than comes the french door for the office, a new deck off that room, siding and new pavement for the driveway once those are done Im done all my remodeling Been 7 years of remodeling so far and Im happy to see the light at the end of the tunnel phew!
