Perfect time for this. Try Cape Cod out by the tip. Truro, Orleans and P'town are a little cheaper this time of year and you can usually find a room. If you are comfortable spending time in the gay community, P'town is a great tourist place and perfect for a weekend. Nice B&Bs, live entertainment, tons of shopping, bike rentals...Just keep the G/F close by!
Maine and NH could be tough. I think the foliage season may have started already. Still, I would try the Kennebunk area.

My wife and I went to Littleton NH, and stayed at the Thayers Inn.
It's a really quaint place that was built around 1850. A nice Italian restaurant across the street. Fun roads, and not far from the White mountains.

Hey Steve, since you are not taking the S, think about a Ferry. I have three nice trips in mind:
P'town (take ferry from Boston)
Nova Scotia (take ferry from Portland I think)
Nantucket (take ferry from Hyannis)
Could do Martha's Vinyard too. Take Ferry from Falmouth Harbor or Woods Hole.

Go Maine! Drive a bit further up north than the tourist traps in Kittery (take the scenic Rt.1A !) and make hotel reservations in advance.
If you want mountains with your water then head to the Catskills, north of the lake George toursit trap or NH.
Whatever you decide just make sure you don't end up driving half the day to get there - this will limit your choices! Did you consider RI? It's not too far, you'll get the water, peace & quite & check into a nice B&B. Bill's got some good ideas for you too.
