Default Important question

When you cook a chicken, AFTER you wash it out, YES it must be washed out, do you peel an onion and put it in the pan to roast with the chicken.

I've always done this because my mother did, but truly wonder if I'm not just wasting an onion.

So what do you professional cooks have to say about this??

I think it's to help flavor the drippings, should you use any of them to make a gravy. I don't think the onion flavor could be absorbed by the chicken.

Not true. They will live. They might just be for a while.

that's a new one on me.
now if you put the onion in the body cavity it would definitely pick up the flavor.
the onion will provide some moisture for the chicken as it roasts.

anybody else ever shoot up their chicken??
we inject wine, lemon or orange juice in to the chicken with a baster and syringe a day before we cook it.
call it junkie chicken.

another trick is beer can chicken.
open a can of beer and put the chicken over the can and roast it vertically on the grill.
even have a little holder for it.
comes out wicked moist.

Cook a chicken?!? You lost me at the word "cook"! I know that a chicken does need to be properly washed, scrubbed and de-icked before it's cooked by someone (not me). As far as throwing an onion in with the chicken while it's cooking......I've never seen that done!!

Chicken drippings for gravy

There's something sooooo wrong with using drippings of any sort to make the meal taste better.
