Default Insurance coverage issue

We don't drive the S in the winter but have always kept it insured with full coverage, just in case we get a nice day.

It's getting expensive to do that, so even though it's time to take it out of hibernation, I was thinking about what we would do next year. Turns out we don't have a lot of options.

We could drop collision and save a whopping $50.00 a month or so.
Totally take it off the road, but then we'd have no coverage if a tree fell on it, not prepared to take that chance.
I thought we could take it off the road, and insure it under our homeowner's for fire/theft/damages, but was told no can do.
Car insurance company won't provide fire and theft only, even if the plates are turned in.
Drop all coverages to minimum, keep it legally registered, not drive it, (we could bump coverages back up with a phone call if nice weather comes in,) but we have an issue with another policy if we don't carry specific insurance coverages on our registered vehicles.

Insurance companies are so difficult to deal with.

Yeah, they get you coming and going. Especialy in MA where the industry is "regulated" and there is no competition. Thats why good companies like Geico won't sell here.

Lainey,

I drop collision off mine during the winter months and as long as you keep comprehensive on the car you should be all set. That covers acts of God, (tree), theft, and vandalism. I use Geico and only pay $130.00 for the six months of winter up here in VT and I'm age 30.

Maybe insurance companies don't work the same way where you are?

That's an understatement, Josh. Down here, they don't work. They just sit back and collect HUGE F'N premiums from us poor, incredibly ridiculously bizzarley regulated folks.

Unfortunately, not the same in MA. Our insurance on the S is about $1200-$1300/year. Dropping collision only will only save us about $150-200.00. All liability has to be kept on the vehicle in order to keep the plates. Gotta have plates in order to have insurance.

Wow...that is just crazy!

Sometimes I think my insurance is a little high, but I guess I should just count my lucky stars!

I don't know. I've lived in a state where insurance was regulated and one where it was not. I paid more in the unregulated state. Also, prices wildly fluctuated by about 50% in the unregulated state depending on which agent you went to.
