I have the Verizon 900 minute peak and unlimited data plan for $99.99 /mo
I get 900 peak minutes, free nights/weekends and unlimited "in" calling (Verizon to Verizon calls) plus unlimited web useage. And I use the heck out of it too
So far, Verizon has been the best carrier out of many I have been with. Also, check if your employer is in their discount plan. I slid in on a discount plan and got 15% off, so I only pay $85/mo now. I am learnign how to save a buck like you, Steve.

yes, Sprint also has EVDO service, I used it when I had a blackberry and it was just as fast for tethering. Just make sure that the model phone you get utilizes the EVDO signal, otherwise you will end up on a 1X service which is slow.
