Default let's talk oil

do i did an oil change yesterday and used Castrol Edge - the ads for Edge say it protects 8* better than mobile one -

my take is that i'll use full synthetic in the car and change the oil every 6k and i'll use whatever synthetic is on sale ($30.00 for 5 quarts and a good filter)

was reading about mobile one and there were some posts that say Mobile One was sued because they are not selling a full synthetic oil and some claim they reformulated the stuff late 2001 but we checked a gallon erick had and it said synthetic

much like apple, Mobil one had a huge fan base BUT are there better synthetics out there for the same cost? also i don't buy the factory fill bs - that is a marketing scam where mobile one just gives free oil / oil caps to the manufacturers

I've read and re-read so much stuff online about motor oil, and quite frankly, I think just about anything SAE certified is good enough for most cars. I do use Mobil 1 in the S2000, but mostly because I think synthetic is a bit better for an engine that gets intermittent use and is so high-revving... but since I don't rack up the miles on it, it isn't much more money. I'm not about to go out of my way for anything special, and Mobil 1 is easy to find.

found this

Mobil 1 was reformulated several years ago from a Group IV base motor oil (PAO) to a blend of Group III and IV synthetic oils. Since then it has never produced to same results on oil analysis reports. It seems the public still think they are buying the same motor oil they used in the nineties.

sounds like the same thing when someone buys a name and makes it junk - ie MTD mowers etc etc

i guess i could use any oil as long as it's changed at the 5k mark everything will be fine - then again i never keep cars longer than 3 years so i guess it doesn't matter

oh and yup Wamart still sells the 5 quart jug at a great price but shops like advance auto and autozone now sell 4 quart jugs

Oddly, I actually know some inside info on the oil jug sizes. My wife works for a label company in town, and they print the labels for all of Valvoline's retail oil.

Wal-Mart has an exclusive agreement with Valvoline for the 5 qt jugs. You cannot buy a 5 qt jug of Valvoline branded oil anywhere except Wal Mart. AutoZone, in turn, has exclusive rights to the 5 LITER jug of Valvoline. (Which, oddly, is physically the same plastic jug, just with a bit more oil and a different label) Anywhere else, a jug is only 4 qts.

It seems that Mobil has the same agreement with Wal Mart.

My car calls for BMW Synthetic. Some claim it is Mobil 1, some claim it is Castrol, some claim it is made by one of the two, but is not the same as over-the-counter stuff. Who knows? BMW says you can go 10,000 miles plus on their stuff.

Yeah, but isn't that long interval because a BMW has a huge capacity making it take longer for the oil to get fouled?

I used to buy only Mobil1, but I have been just buying whatever synthetic is on sale and changing around 5-6k. I think I'll be fine.

They put the cheapest crapola they can get into the cars at work which run 24/7 for usually 3-4 years and 100k+ miles. I have never heard of any of the engines dying due to failure unless someone let it run dry.
